FIFTY FIFTY: The Miracle of a Small-to-Medium Group Now Under Legal Fire
A lawsuit has been filed involving the K-pop group FIFTY FIFTY, which had been lauded as the "Miracle of a Small-to-Medium Group." The legal action was initiated by the group's agency, Attrakt, against a service provider in charge of the group's project.
On June 27, Attrakt filed a lawsuit at the Gangnam Police Station against Sung-il An, CEO of TheGivers, and three other individuals. An had been broadly involved in the production of FIFTY FIFTY's hit song "Cupid" and is listed as one of the copyright holders on the Korean Music Copyright Association.
TheGivers had been engaged under a service agreement with Attrakt, managing the group's project and handling related work. Attrakt alleges that during the handover of responsibilities, TheGivers intentionally delayed the process, deleted company emails and project-related materials, and engaged in acts of business interference, electronic record damage, fraud, and breach of trust.
Moreover, Attrakt revealed that TheGivers didn't provide information about purchasing the rights to the song "Cupid" from a foreign composer, but secretly acquired the rights under their own name and company.
An Attrakt spokesperson emphasized that "There are other serious suspicions that may lead to further lawsuits."
Previously, Attrakt had exposed an external force attempting to violate exclusive contracts with FIFTY FIFTY members. They claimed that Warner Music Korea was involved.
Attrakt caught wind of a situation where "a certain outsourcing company approached Warner Music Korea with a proposal to sell off FIFTY FIFTY" and sent a certified letter to Warner Music Korea about it.
Warner Music Korea, which had been in charge of FIFTY FIFTY's overseas distribution, expressed regret over the unfounded allegations, insisting "The claims made by Attract are groundless."
During these developments, FIFTY FIFTY's official fan cafe temporarily closed, causing a stir. Attrakt blamed 'external forces' for this issue, stating that it was due to unauthorized account theft by an external force, which resulted in a post related to the closure of FIFTY FIFTY's official fan cafe.
FIFTY FIFTY has been celebrated as a "Miracle of a Small-to-Medium Group" for the past few months. Their new song "Cupid," released in February, became a word-of-mouth hit on TikTok, sweeping the U.S. Billboard charts - an achievement not even big agency girl groups have accomplished. As of July 1, the song has held the 24th position on the Billboard main chart 'Hot 100' for 14 consecutive weeks, marking the longest record for a K-pop girl group.
Adding to their accomplishments, FIFTY FIFTY also made the OST lineup for the upcoming movie "Barbie," starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. They participated as the singers of "Barbie Dreams," adding heat to their overseas activities.
However, due to member Aran undergoing surgery for health reasons in May and conflicts between the agency and 'external forces' coming to light, the group's full-scale activities for the time being remain uncertain.
