Late Actress Kim Sae-ron's Final Letter to Husband Hints at Suicidal Thoughts - Report
As legal disputes surrounding the death of actress Kim Sae-ron continue to escalate, a newly surfaced handwritten letter addressed to her husband sheds light on the late actress's psychological distress and emotional breakdown in the months preceding her death.
While the family of Kim Sae-ron has publicly accused actor Kim Soo-hyun of dating the actress during her underage years, a separate narrative involving her husband, referred to publicly as "Mr. A," has largely escaped scrutiny. Mr. A, known in media as the "New York man," and a former boyfriend, Mr. K, have both released documents and messages, igniting further debate around the causes of the actress's apparent suicide.
In a lengthy two-page handwritten letter shared by Mr. A, Kim reflected on the breakdown of their relationship following a whirlwind marriage that took place just two months after they met in November of last year. The wedding, held earlier this year in the U.S., was described by insiders as abrupt and emotionally fraught.
"Our brief and intense connection has come to an end," Kim wrote. "If only we had taken our time, gotten to know each other better, maybe things wouldn't have ended so quickly." The letter, filled with expressions of regret, self-doubt, and references to "eternity" and "death," appears to document her descent into despair. "I once thought I wanted to die," she confessed.
The note also highlights Kim's feelings of abandonment and emotional neglect during key moments in her life, including interactions with her husband's family. "I wanted to be your eternal person. At first it was revenge, then it was hope for something bigger. But in the end, I only hurt you. I was lonely because you weren't there."
Kim's marriage reportedly began to unravel almost immediately, with frequent arguments and accusations. According to texts exchanged between the couple and later made public, her husband resorted to controlling behavior-confiscating her phone and monitoring her messages. In one message sent on January 13, he allegedly wrote: "You're married now, so stop talking to other guys. Clean up your own mess, [expletive]."
Meanwhile, former boyfriend Mr. K claimed that Kim increasingly reached out to him during this period, sharing fears about her husband's aggression. In one text she wrote, "He hacked my Instagram, leaked our photos, beat me, and cursed me. I was too scared to leave him."
The escalating mental distress reportedly led Kim to self-harm on multiple occasions after November 2023.
The emergence of this private letter coincides with a broader controversy involving Kim Soo-hyun. On March 10, the actress's family publicly alleged through YouTube channel Ga Se-yeon that Kim, now 36, had been in a relationship with Kim Sae-ron starting in 2015, when she was in middle school. They claim the relationship lasted for six years and included psychological pressure from Kim's agency, Gold Medalist, over a 700 million won ($530,000) claim related to a drunk driving incident.
Kim Soo-hyun has denied the accusations, stating that the pair began dating in the summer of 2019-after Kim Sae-ron had reached adulthood-and broke up in the fall of 2020. He also denied having any role in legal action against her and asserted that the demand for damages stemmed from contractual violations following her DUI.
At a press conference held March 31, Kim Soo-hyun reiterated: "I never dated her when she was a minor." He added that any relationship occurred "five years before 'Queen of Tears' aired and lasted for a year."
In response, the bereaved family of Kim Sae-ron, in cooperation with Ga Se-yeon, released additional private videos and messages, which they say substantiate their claims. The agency representing Kim Soo-hyun has filed a 12 billion won ($9 million) defamation lawsuit against the family and the YouTube channel, marking one of the largest celebrity lawsuits in recent Korean entertainment history.
