V's Self-Produced Song 'Blue & Grey' Named Among BTS's Top 15 by Billboard
BTS's V's self-composed and produced track, 'Blue & Grey', has been listed among the top 15 songs by Billboard for the group.
In commemoration of BTS's 10th anniversary, Billboard selected the top 15 songs based on weekly performance among those that have charted on the Hot 100.
Billboard has recognized BTS for not only influencing K-Pop, but the broader music scene, and has likened their massive and loyal fan base to that of The Beatles.
Although largely unknown at the time of their debut in 2013, Billboard began to take notice of the band when their 2017 album 'Love Yourself: Her' reached number 7 on the Billboard 200. The chart attention continued when 'DNA' became their first song to enter the Hot 100, and 'Dynamite' clinched their first number one spot, retracing BTS's rise to fame.
Regarding the inclusion of 'Blue & Grey' in the top 15, Billboard described it as a "beautiful introspective ballad, with lyrics and composition by V."
'Blue & Grey', featured in the 'BE (Deluxe Edition)' album released on November 20, 2020, was first heard as background music during a scene in the variety show 'In The Soop', where V was seen paddling a canoe in thoughtful solitude. Initially intended to be included in V's mixtape, it was included in the regular album due to strong recommendations from the other members.
During a global press conference for the 'BE' album, V openly shared his experience with burnout and the process of overcoming it, earning him empathy from many.
Regarding the birth of 'Blue & Grey', V expressed, "I experienced a lot of burnout. It was psychologically hard, but writing the feelings of burnout into a song helped. Before, it was just hard, but writing these emotions into a song gave me a sense of accomplishment and helped me conquer it. I tried to cope by writing all my feelings into lyrics, melody, and track, and it gradually got better." The beautiful melody and lyrics received much acclaim.
UK music outlet 'NME' praised the song for containing a deep narrative of salvation, delicately expressing anxiety and depression. They added, "It's refreshing to see a global boyband honestly depict anxiety and depression."
The UK's Independent newspaper also highly praised the track as a "song that comforts the isolation caused by the pandemic." World-renowned popera tenor Lim Hyung-joo named it his favorite emotionally touching song, and American lyrics website Genius selected it as one of the 'Hottest Lyrics of the Month.'
