BTS Suga Soars to No. 2 on Billboard 200 with Solo Album 'D-DAY'
BTS member Suga's solo album 'D-DAY' has climbed to No. 2 on the US Billboard 200 main album chart. The title track, "Haegeum," also secured a spot at No. 58 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
On May 1, Billboard unveiled a portion of the May 8th Billboard 200 and Hot 100 rankings, announcing that Suga's album "recorded the fourth-highest weekly sales in the US this year, reaching No. 2 on the Billboard 200." This achievement matches the highest-charting K-pop solo artist record, which was previously held by BTS' Jimin with his album 'FACE' last month.
The Billboard 200 ranks albums based on a combination of streaming, digital downloads converted to album sales, and physical album sales. According to Billboard, 90% of Suga's "D-DAY" sales were from physical copies, with 122,000 physical copies sold, 12,500 streaming equivalent albums, and 5,500 digital downloads. K-pop stars with strong fandoms, like Suga, have historically shown particular strength in physical album sales on this chart.
"D-DAY" is an album released under Suga's solo pseudonym, "August D." It features 10 tracks, including the title track "Haegeum," a collaboration with singer IU called "People Pt. 2," as well as "Geukya," "Snooze," and others, all of which were written, composed, and produced by Suga himself. Among these tracks, the Korean musical instrument "Haegeum" uses the double entendre of the traditional Korean instrument "haegeum" and "lifting restrictions" to throw the keyword "freedom" to people who live entangled in various constraints and limitations in everyday life and society. Following the success of Suga's 2020 mixtape track "Daechwita," which also incorporated traditional Korean musical elements, "Haegeum" has received critical acclaim for its unique fusion of modern and traditional sounds.
