Following BTS, TXT Eyes the Sky: Nominated for MTV VMA After Billboard #1
The wave of change began in the world of pop music in 2017. The 'global superstar' group BTS started to dominate major U.S. music awards, beginning with the 'Billboard Music Awards', and made their debut on the Billboard main song chart 'Hot 100'.
Fast forward six years to 2023, TOMORROW X TOGETHER (TXT) has been officially invited to the '2023 MTV Video Music Awards' (2023 MTV VMA) held on September 13th, 9 PM (Korean time) at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. This achievement comes just 4 years and 6 months after their debut in March 2019, setting a new record for the shortest time taken by a K-pop artist to perform at the 'MTV VMA'.
TXT's debut at the 'MTV VMA' reminds many of their label seniors, BTS. BTS set foot in a major U.S. award show for the first time in May 2017, five years after their debut, at the 'Billboard Music Awards'. They were the first Korean group to win a trophy at this ceremony. Later in September 2017, they simultaneously entered the two main Billboard charts: 'Hot 100' and 'Billboard 200'.
In February 2017, BTS's entry into the 'Bubbling Under Hot 100' at #15 raised expectations for their 'Hot 100' debut, which they achieved in September with 'DNA'. Since then, BTS has consistently entered the 'Hot 100' chart every year, ultimately making history in 2020 with 'Dynamite' as the first Korean artist to top the 'Hot 100'.
TXT, also in their fifth year since debut, has been showing explosive growth and is often referred to as the 'post-BTS'. In January, their song 'Sugar Rush Ride' reached #4 on the 'Bubbling Under Hot 100', and the album featuring this song, 'Name of the Chapter: TEMPTATION', shot straight to #1 on the 'Billboard 200'.
A year after making their debut at the U.S. music festival 'Lollapalooza', TXT headlined the festival this August. The legacy of K-pop artists headlining 'Lollapalooza' has been passed from BTS (with J-Hope's historic headliner performance in 2022) to TXT.
At the 2023 MTV VMA, TXT has been nominated in four categories: 'Group of the Year', 'Song of Summer', 'PUSH Performance of the Year', and 'Best K-Pop'. Notably, in the 'Song of Summer' category, they stand alongside global top artists like BTS's Jungkook, Beyoncé, and Taylor Swift, further solidifying their rising stature.
The 'MTV VMA', which began in 1984 and celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, is one of the most prestigious music award ceremonies in the U.S. Alongside the Grammy Awards, Billboard Music Awards, and American Music Awards, it's considered one of the top four U.S. music award ceremonies. All eyes are on TXT to see if they can soar even higher by clinching an award at the MTV VMA.
