BTS Jungkook's 'Seven' Storms the World: Unleashing a Ripple Effect Across Multiple Frontiers
BTS's Jungkook is receiving worldwide attention with his solo debut song “”Seven“”. Not only did it top domestic charts, but it also broke into the number one spot on the Billboard Main Chart, the 'Billboard Hot 100'. This impressive achievement of 'Seven' is showcasing its world-class impact not just for Jungkook himself, but across multiple spheres.
One individual directly hit by this impact is rapper Latto, who participated in 'Seven'. Having debuted in 2017, Latto's 'Big Energy' from her second studio album "777" released in 2022 scored the third spot on the "Billboard Hot 100", leading to her nomination for the Best New Artist at the 2023 Grammy Awards. With her participation in Jungkook's "Seven", Latto saw her name at the top of the "Billboard Hot 100" for the first time.
Upon the release of "Seven", Jungkook expressed his gratitude, saying, "I was looking for a rapper who would suit the song, and I thought Latto would be a good fit. I'm grateful that she agreed willingly, and both the music video and song turned out great." Latto, in return, thanked Jungkook for believing in her after topping the 'Billboard Hot 100'.
However, not all attention toward Latto was positive. After the collaboration between Jungkook and Latto was revealed, Latto's past racially insensitive remarks surfaced. Latto had posted content mocking Asians on her social media in 2015. When the tweet stirred up controversy, she deleted the post and asked those quoting her post to remove it. This behavior has drawn various responses, such as "It's excessive to make an issue out of a post from eight years ago", and "She should apologize instead of just deleting her post."
Han So-hee, who appeared in the "Seven" music video, is also garnering much attention. In the video, she played the lover to Jungkook. Initially seen as indifferent to Jungkook's relentless declarations of love, she eventually reciprocates his feelings. Reflecting on the experience, Jungkook shared, "At first, I was unsure how to go about it, but once the cameras started rolling, she acted so well. I relied on her a lot and she helped me perform well."
Following the release of the "Seven" music video, Han So-hee shared photos taken during the shoot on her Instagram. Not only her fans but also global ARMYs (BTS fans) flooded the post. The majority of fans expressed their gratitude with comments like "Thank you for your excellent acting" and "Thank you for helping with Jungkook's first solo song."
Known for her roles in "The World of the Married", 'My Name' and for being the global ambassador of various luxury brands, Han So-hee encountered some people meeting her for the first time through the "Seven" music video. They were instantly smitten by her visuals and acting. The fact that she played Jungkook's love interest sparked some jealousy among certain die-hard fans. Although there were some negative comments on Han So-hee's Instagram, the number was minimal and other fans stepped in to apologize on behalf of these detractors.
Even though not directly involved in the song, SBS's "Inkigayo" is another entity fully reaping the influence of "Seven". Jungkook initially revealed his solo stage at the '2023 Summer Concert Series' held by GMA in New York and performed live on the UK's BBC "The One Show". However, no performances of 'Seven' have yet been revealed domestically. The first will be unveiled on 'Inkigayo' on the 30th.
On the morning of July 27, Jungkook announced his appearance on "Inkigayo" during a V Live session, "Having performed in New York and London, I started missing performing on music shows. After reaching number one on Billboard, I felt like I should give back," he explained. "Even though I wanted to perform right away, I'm glad I got the chance now."
Jungkook then continued, "I wanted to meet [the fans] before the excitement dies down. We made a swift decision, so not many will be able to attend. I have scheduled commitments before and after, so I only had time on Sunday. It might be difficult to appear on other music shows." By being the only platform in Korea to showcase Jungkook's new song, SBS has become another beneficiary of 'Seven'.
After news of Jungkook's "Inkigayo" appearance spread, many domestic fans erupted in cheers. Even though only a very small number will have the chance to witness the performance live, they are excited for another video of Jungkook's stage. Jungkook's fans are encouraging each other to vote and help Jungkook claim the top spot on "Inkigayo".
