DKZ's Kyoungyoon Exits Group After JMS Controversy; Plans Military Enlistment This Year
Five months after the uproar surrounding his affiliation with Christian Gospel Mission (JMS), Kyoungyoon, a member of boy group DKZ, is leaving the group.
On the afternoon of the 7th, the boy's agency, Dongyo Entertainment, posted an update titled "Current Status and Future Directions for Member Kyoungyoon" on their official fan community.
DKZ stated, "We sincerely thank all the fans who have always supported DKZ and would like to update you on Kyoungyoon's future plans. Since last April, due to health reasons, Kyoungyoon has halted his activities to focus on intensive treatment. After considerable recovery, he had a deep discussion with the agency about the direction of his future activities."
According to DKZ, Kyoungyoon plans to fulfill his national defense duties by enlisting in the military later this year. The group said, "Kyoungyoon feels deeply responsible for causing concerns to both the members and the fans, regardless of the reason. We will support Kyoungyoon wholeheartedly, hoping he returns to fans in good health."
Kyoungyoon then uploaded a handwritten letter to console his fans. "It feels like a very long time since I've greeted you, and for that, I'm truly sorry," he began cautiously. He continued, "I'm sincerely sorry to the fans who might have been surprised and disappointed by the events. I want to express my gratitude to the fans who worried about me."
Furthermore, he added, "I've spent the past five months reflecting deeply on what's the best decision for everyone I cherish. In the end, I decided to depart from DKZ as Kyoungyoon. I hope fans understand my choice."
Kyoungyoon expressed, "Even for the sake of the remaining members, I don't want to regret my decision. I'm still rooting for them and have not forgotten the gratitude I feel for our fans. I'll always keep these feelings in my heart. Thank you for loving and supporting DKZ's Kyoungyoon."
Previously, after the release of Netflix's documentary 'I am God: Those Betrayed by God' in March, Kyoungyoon became embroiled in controversy over suspicions of being a 'JMS follower'. Amid revelations about the misconduct of JMS leader Jeong Myung-seok, a cafe operated by Kyoungyoon's parents was also listed among businesses associated with JMS.
Following the controversy, the agency stated, "Kyoungyoon himself was shocked upon verifying the broadcast content. The business run by his family ceased operations immediately. We assure there will be no future associations with specific organizations." Kyoungyoon also apologized, saying, "Words I casually mentioned in the past brought about greater misunderstandings. I deeply reflect on and regret everything, and I apologize for my many shortcomings."
Thereafter, diagnosed with anxiety and social phobia, Kyoungyoon ceased all activities to focus on treatment and did not participate in any schedules.
