Wordplay or Disparagement? Travis Scott's New Song 'K-POP' Sparks Controversy
American hip-hop artist Travis Scott's new song 'K-POP' has become a hot topic among fans.
Released on the 21st, 'K-POP' is a collaborative piece featuring American hip-hop artist Travis Scott, R&B singer The Weeknd, and Latin artist Bad Bunny.
Upon the revelation of the song title, speculations arose that it might contain discussions about K-pop. However, the actual song did not contain any K-pop related content.
Sony Music Korea stated, "We have received no information indicating any connection between this song and K-pop or Korea."
Nevertheless, some netizens have been critical due to the song's lyrics mentioning a Korean woman, and its suggestive content hinting at drugs and sexual relations. Opinions such as "It indirectly degrades K-pop" and "It seems like a noise marketing tactic using K-pop" were voiced.
On the other hand, considering that Scott is a hip-hop artist, and The Weeknd has always incorporated darker themes like drugs into his music, there are also views suggesting that, "It's just linguistic play, considering it as a degradation of K-pop is an excessive stretch."
Kim Dohun, a popular music critic, stated, "It seems to have a double meaning in its title. The fact that it mentions a Korean woman and includes content about sexual pleasure, some may find it distasteful."
He continued, "However, The Weeknd has shown his love for K-pop, even publicly acknowledging his enjoyment of Nu'est's music, so it does not seem intended to degrade K-pop."
Previously, Travis Scott revealed in an interview the reason behind the title, saying, "The original title was Lollipop. It deals with the subject of becoming famous. I thought it would be appropriate to put 'K-POP' in the title because K-pop stars have such a massive following."
The album cover features a red lollipop on a white background, which some Korean fans have said "recalls the flag of Japan" and have reacted negatively, saying "the unrelated album cover is irritating."
