FIFTY FIFTY's Swift Fall from Grace: From Miracle Rookies to Legal Mud-Slinging within Months
Once hailed as the 'Miracle of the Smaller Idols,' K-pop group FIFTY FIFTY is now in crisis due to internal disputes and looming legal battles.
FIFTY FIFTY, a four-member girl group consisting of Saena, Aran, Keena, and Sio, debuted in November last year. Although they did not make a splash initially, their first single 'The Beginning: Cupid,' released in February, shot them to fame overnight, especially its title track, 'CUPID', which enjoyed global acclaim.
'CUPID,' along with its English version 'CUPID (Twin Ver.)' and the instrumental track, registered over 300 million streams worldwide. The song 'CUPID' alone was used in over 6 million TikTok videos, accumulating more than 9.5 billion views on the platform, validating the group's meteoric rise in popularity.
Thanks to the success of 'CUPID,' FIFTY FIFTY entered the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart in April, merely four months after their debut, setting a new record for the fastest entry into the Billboard Hot 100 by a K-pop group. They also managed to enter the UK Official Chart Top 100, among other global achievements, and consistently set new records for K-pop girl groups.
Soon after, FIFTY FIFTY announced their partnership with Warner Records, solidifying their expansion into the U.S. market. They also participated in the soundtrack for the movie 'Barbie,' putting their names alongside global pop stars like Dua Lipa, Lizzo, Ice Spice, and Nicki Minaj, which is quite an achievement for a rookie group from a small agency.
However, recently, conflicts have arisen among the group members, the company Attrakt, and The Givers, an outsourced production team. On June 23, Attract claimed that they had evidence of outside forces enticing FIFTY FIFTY members to violate their exclusive contracts, causing a stir.
Attrakt stated that these external elements were using derogatory remarks against the company and flattering themselves to persuade the artists to disregard their valid exclusive contracts and sign with them, which they described as an illegal act.
Subsequently, Attrakt suggested that an outsourced service company and Warner Music Korea were involved in this issue and sent a legal notice to Warner Music Korea. In response, Warner Music Korea refuted these allegations, expressing regret over the receipt of the notice.
In a strong countermove, Attrakt filed a lawsuit on June 27 against The Givers and three others, accusing them of obstructing business by delaying the handover of duties, deleting the company's email accounts, and destroying project-related data. They also alleged that The Givers committed fraud and embezzlement.
In their defense, The Givers denied any involvement or wrongdoing, and their legal representative, BARUN Law Firm, stated that they had diligently carried out their duties as per the outsourcing contract from the establishment of Attract until now. They further claimed that they acted as a bridge between Attract and the FIFTY FIFTY members even after the termination of their duties. Despite this, they claimed that Attract and its representative, Jeon Hong Jun, knowingly spread false information damaging the reputation and operations of The Givers and its employees.
Adding to the drama, all four members of FIFTY FIFTY have also turned against Attract. On June 19, the members filed an application to suspend the effect of their exclusive contracts with the Seoul Central District Court, which is now in progress.
According to the members' legal representative, BARUN Law Firm, "Attrakt unilaterally postponed the schedules and notified the members of the contract termination only after all schedules had ended. Also, Attrakt has made no compensation for any of the group's activities so far, stating that the company's earnings are still in the red. The company has acted unreasonably and has lost its trustworthiness."
As the scandal continues to unfold, fans around the world are expressing their concern for the FIFTY FIFTY members. Several online petitions have been initiated in support of the members, and hashtags like #ProtectFIFTYFIFTY, #StandWithFIFTYFIFTY, and #JusticeForFIFTYFIFTY are trending on various social media platforms.
Meanwhile, with the uncertainty around FIFTY FIFTY's future, the K-pop industry is experiencing a major shock. As one of the rising stars of 2023, their sudden internal dispute and legal battle could significantly impact the global perception of the industry.
The FIFTY FIFTY situation brings to light the hidden dark side of the K-pop industry: the constant pressure, the ruthlessness of contracts, and the cruelly high expectations of fans. The hope is that their story will lead to greater transparency and fair treatment in the industry. For now, fans can only hope for the best for these talented artists as they navigate through these troubled waters.
As the legal dispute continues, the future of FIFTY FIFTY remains uncertain. With their immediate activities halted, it's impossible to predict what their next move will be or if the group will even survive this crisis.
However, what's undeniable is the significant influence FIFTY FIFTY had in the K-pop scene in just a few months. Their journey from humble beginnings to global stardom and now a sudden fall, serves as a stark reminder of the volatile nature of the entertainment industry.
In the midst of all the legal wrangling, the one thing that is clear is that the world is still eagerly awaiting FIFTY FIFTY's next step. Regardless of the outcome, it's certain that their brief but impactful time in the spotlight has left an indelible mark on the K-pop scene.
