Singer Horan's Return to TV Stirs Controversy Over Past Drunk Driving Incidents
Singer Horan made a recent appearance on MBC's "King of Mask Singer," sparking a cold response from the public due to the singer's history of drunk driving incidents. The popular singing competition, which conceals contestants' identities, had viewers captivated by Horan's charming voice and powerful performance. However, as soon as her identity was revealed, criticism began to pour in.
Viewers took to the show's online message board, posting comments such as "Is this show encouraging drunk driving?", "Are you helping a criminal return to the spotlight?", and "If there's no one else to cast, just cancel the show. It's uncomfortable." The intense backlash stems from Horan's three separate drunk driving incidents, the most recent of which took place in 2016 and resulted in injuries to another person. At the time, her blood alcohol concentration was 0.101%, and she was fined 7 million won ($5,900).
Despite having already been fined for drunk driving in 2004 and 2007, Horan faced the consequences again for her reckless actions in 2016. Following the incident, she issued an apology, expressing regret for the harm caused to the victim and announcing her departure from the entertainment industry. After a period of reflection, Horan released a new single, "I Wish," in 2018 and began making her comeback.
In 2019, she appeared on MBN's "Can We Love Again?" and apologized for her drunk driving incidents. However, the public's response remained chilly, prompting her to apologize once more on tvN's "Free Doctor M" last year.
During her apologies, Horan confessed to feeling a tremendous amount of guilt and regret for causing trouble for her fellow members of the group Clazziquai. She pledged to work hard to show a better side of herself and prove her worth. However, it seems that more time and effort may be needed for her to win back the public's favor.
