South Korea's top stars are making waves in Cannes, France.

The '76th Cannes Film Festival' kicks off on May 16. Held every May in Cannes, a city in southern France, the festival is considered the Mecca of international film festivals due to its grand scale. This year's festival will run until the 27th.

A hefty number of Korean films have been invited to this year's festival. Although none made it into the competitive category, "Space Sweepers" starring Song Joong-ki, "The Hellbound" that marks a significant collaboration between Song Kang-ho and director Kim Ji-woon, and "Our Day," director Hong Sang-soo's twelfth entry at Cannes, will all be showcased at the festival.

Especially noteworthy is Song Joong-ki's Cannes debut with "Space Sweepers." This is the first time Song will grace the red carpet in Cannes. "Space Sweepers" is a story of a young boy who, desiring to escape his hellish reality, ends up in a precarious world with a mid-level boss of an organization. Song Joong-ki, Hong Sa-bin, and Kim Hyung-seo will be attending Cannes together for the film.

Last year, IU made her Cannes debut with "Broker." This year, it's Jennie's turn. Jennie of BLACKPINK will be attending the festival for the HBO original series, "The Idol." The world premiere of "The Idol" is set for 10:30 pm on the 22nd. Given BLACKPINK's global popularity, Jennie's appearance at the festival is expected to generate significant media buzz.

The competition category this year features 21 feature films. Worth noting are Ken Loach's "The Old Oak" on his 14th invite to Cannes, Hirokazu Kore-eda's "Monster," who was invited to Cannes last year with "Broker," Wim Wenders' "Perfect Days," and Wes Anderson's "Asteroid City," known for "The Grand Budapest Hotel." In particular, "Monster" is meaningful as it features music by the late Japanese music legend, Sakamoto Ryuichi, who passed away in March.

In addition to these films, the '76th Cannes Film Festival' will also showcase "Indiana Jones: The Dial of Destiny," the fifth installment in the "Indiana Jones" series (non-competitive category), and Disney Pixar's new film "Elemental" (closing film). With a host of glamorous stars and prominent figures in the film industry in attendance, this year's festival is expected to attract more global attention than ever before.
