Tragic Solitude: Late Singer Choi Sung-Bong's Lonely Death Awaits a Funeral
Two days have passed since the death of singer Choi Sung-Bong, but his funeral has yet to take place.
According to a close associate on the 23rd, the body of the late Choi Sung-Bong is currently temporarily housed in the morgue of a hospital after an autopsy by the National Forensic Service. The body was transported to the hospital after the autopsy, but it is classified as a death with no next of kin since no family has come forward to claim it.
Choi Sung-Bong revealed during his 2011 appearance on the tvN audition program 'Korea's Got Talent' that he was abandoned by his biological parents at age three and left in an orphanage.
The associate told Star News, "As Choi Sung-Bong has no family, he's classified as a death with no next of kin, and we can't immediately receive his body," adding, "We have to talk to the local ward office after the weekend. There are documents to submit, and the process is complicated."
This associate is a friend who helped with Choi Sung-Bong's work during his lifetime and stepped forward to send him off on his last journey. The associate stated, "I intend to hold Sung-Bong's funeral in place of his family," and "The exact funeral schedule will probably be announced next week."
The associate is also planning to create a memorial space for fans. They said, "In the case of death with no next of kin, I understand that the city provides a free communal funeral, but I want to create a space where fans can mourn, even for just one day," and added, "He was a lonely kid from the start, so it's hard to just let him go. He made many mistakes and public opinion is not favorable, but I think those who want to pay their respects will come."
According to the police, Choi Sung-Bong was found dead at his home in Yeoksam-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, at around 9:41 am on the 20th. He was 33 years old. The police concluded there were no signs of foul play based on the circumstances at the scene and the results of the autopsy.
On the day of his death, Choi Sung-Bong posted a message hinting at his drastic decision on his YouTube channel community, stating, "I wanted to express my resentment as this is my last message, but I've decided to bury it in my heart because the love I received from you over the years is much greater. I sincerely apologize and am deeply sorry for my foolish mistakes and the damage they caused. I've refunded all those who have inquired about donations for the past two years. I now plan to pay for my sins with my life."
A citizen in Busan who saw the message reported it to the police, and at around 9:17 am that day, the police and fire department who responded to the call found the locked door and discovered Choi Sung-Bong's lifeless body.
Choi Sung-Bong made a name for himself as a runner-up on 'Korea's Got Talent'. He shared his story of living in an orphanage since the age of three and having a tough life after leaving the orphanage at the age of five, which earned him the nickname "Korea's Paul Potts".
Afterward, he released his album 'Slowpoke' in 2014 and held various activities such as charity concerts in Chicago, USA the following year. In 2020, he revealed he was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer, prostate cancer, hypothyroidism, and thyroid cancer during a health checkup, and conducted crowdfunding to raise funds for cancer treatment. However, in 2021, suspicions were raised that Choi Sung-Bong's fight against cancer was a 'lie', and as the controversy grew, Choi Sung-Bong admitted to the suspicions and apologized.
