K-pop idols' stature has risen to the point where they are now considered an important tool in South Korea's diplomacy.

Recently, US First Lady Jill Biden proposed a joint performance featuring K-pop group Blackpink and American artist Lady Gaga, coinciding with South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol's visit to the US in April. The performance symbolizes harmony and cooperation between the two countries. The performance was planned to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the US-Korea alliance, with concerts being held at venues such as Carnegie Hall in New York.

According to the IMF, as of October 2022, the United States ranks first in global GDP, while South Korea ranks 13th. Cooperation between the two countries is expected to create significant synergy in the global economy and society. The collaboration between Blackpink and Lady Gaga exemplifies this synergy.

The concert ultimately did not come to fruition. Blackpink's agency, YG Entertainment, stated that they had received the proposal and reviewed it, but nothing further materialized. Nevertheless, the influence of K-pop idols has expanded beyond the stage and fandom, positively impacting international relations.

The joint performance of Blackpink and Lady Gaga was initially suggested for a state dinner hosted by President Joe Biden and his wife during President Yoon's visit to the US in late April. The proposal was made by First Lady Jill Biden, and YG Entertainment confirmed that they were reviewing the suggestion.

A state dinner is the most formal banquet offered by a host country to a guest country, often considered the highlight of a diplomatic visit. The fact that Blackpink, a group that has achieved impressive success that is difficult even for Western artists, was mentioned as a potential invitee signifies their status as ambassadors of Korean culture. Before Blackpink, BTS was rumored to be a potential participant in the event.

Many fans are concerned about artists being used as political tools and oppose their involvement in diplomatic events. Meeting with certain politicians or attending events can be misinterpreted as conveying a political message, potentially sparking unnecessary controversy. 

Music critic Kang Tae-gyu said, "If artists are not being used politically, but rather receive fair treatment and are invited to perform at diplomatic events, it can help expand their horizons."

The state dinner is expected to be attended by about 300 people from various fields, including politics and culture. The event is anticipated to be more of a celebration rather than one with political intentions.

Moreover, since the event was not a solo Blackpink performance but a joint concert with American pop star Lady Gaga, it was expected to satisfy fans who want to see a diverse range of their favorite artists.

Critic Kim Do-hun commented, "Being invited to a diplomatic event is proof of an artist's influence. If K-pop stars were deliberately used for political events, there would be grounds for criticism. However, if they received an official invitation, it demonstrates their influence."
