Fifty Fifty's Kina Triumphs with Newcomer Award Amid Legal Battles, Upholding Group's Prestige
The group Fifty Fifty swept across the Billboard 'Hot100' chart in the US and the world this year. However, their journey was marred by a suspension injunction application against their exclusive contract, halting their activities and leading to legal disputes. After a prolonged hiatus and legal battles, only member Kina returned to the agency Attract. Following this, Kina clinched a Newcomer Award, thus preserving the honor of Fifty Fifty.
On the 6th, the '38th Golden Disc Awards with Mandari' was held at the Jakarta International Stadium in Indonesia.
During the event, Fifty Fifty's Kina received the Newcomer Award for the first time. She expressed her gratitude, saying, "I'm thankful to everyone at Attract, including CEO Jeon Hong Joon, my family, and the fans known as 'Hunnies,' who helped me stand up again. I promise to repay with good music and albums."
Kina's award holds significance due to the legal disputes faced. Members Saena, Sio, Aran, and Kina of Fifty Fifty filed an injunction against Attract in June, claiming the agency failed to provide settlement data and manage the members' physical and mental health. Attract countered, accusing external forces of attempting to poach members and raised tampering suspicions. The court ultimately ruled in favor of Attract.
However, the members appealed, which was dismissed in October. At this point, Kina withdrew her appeal, apologizing to the 'Hunnies' and thanking them for their unwavering support during uncertain times. She returned to Attract, and the agency, in December, announced a lawsuit for damages and penalties against Saena, Sio, Aran for breach of contract, as well as The Givers, An Seong-il, Baek Jin-sil, and the three members' parents for joint illegal acts.
After receiving her first music royalty settlement, Kina donated 10 million won to the Korean Red Cross to support the independence of youths preparing to live on their own. She decided to contribute after contemplating how to meaningfully use her music earnings to support the fresh starts and dreams of these young adults.
Kina, now embarking on a solo career, attended the '2023 Billboard Music Awards' party hosted by Billboard, reflecting on her journey. She remarked, "It feels surreal to be here. I'm incredibly grateful and have longed to return to those who love us."
With her recent Newcomer Award marking a glorious moment for Fifty Fifty's endeavors, all eyes are on what Kina will bring to the table in her future activities.
