Jeon Somi's Latest Song Embroiled in Copyright Controversy: Fans Await Agency's Response
Following singer Choi Yena's recent controversy, Jeon Somi has also come under the spotlight for a potential copyright issue concerning her new song. The late response of her agency, The Black Label, is prompting disappointment among fans.
After Jeon Somi's new song "Fast Forward" was released on the 7th, allegations arose online, pointing out similarities between an illustrated character in the song's music video and a character from the famous Japanese manga artist Rumiko Takahashi's "Noisy Stars."
On various online platforms and communities, posts highlighting the similarities in the angle of the characters' faces, expressions, and drawing styles have gone viral. Flipping the orientation of the "Noisy Stars" character and overlaying it with the one from the "Fast Forward" music video reveals undeniable resemblances.
Furthermore, the character in question wasn't just featured in the music video but was also utilized in various teaser contents prior to the release. This has led to increasing speculation on whether the original creator had given permission for its use, igniting debates among netizens over the legitimacy of the tracing allegations.
In relation to this, The Black Label, late in the previous afternoon, told XSports News that they were "looking into the matter." Even a day later, they asked for patience, stating that "the confirmation is being delayed."
Before Jeon Somi, Choi Yena had also faced backlash due to a copyright issue with her song "Hate Rodrigo." At that time, her agency, Yuehua Entertainment, suddenly made the music video private without any notification. Only after the controversy spread did they admit, "The music video had issues with trademark, portrait rights, and copyright infringement," making it hard to avoid criticism.
After this issue surfaced, Choi Yena, citing "condition instability," canceled or postponed broadcasts and fan signing events, abruptly ending her promotions. A month after the controversy, Yuehua Entertainment expressed regret in a belated apology, saying, "We humbly accept the affectionate criticisms towards our company and will strive to be more attentive and work harder in the future."
Copyright issues like plagiarism are sensitive matters, making it imperative for agencies to respond swiftly and accurately. Delayed responses or turning a blind eye only amplifies public criticism.
Given the shock and disappointment felt by fans and industry insiders over Yuehua's careless handling of Choi Yena's situation, the growing concerns and frustrations of fans are now heightened as Jeon Somi faces a similar scandal and with her agency's slow response.
As Jeon Somi breaks her long hiatus with this comeback, all eyes are on her, waiting to see how she navigates through this challenge and whether she can continue her promotions smoothly.
