BLACKPINK: A Legacy of Breaking Records and Making History
Records are indeed history. Since their debut, BLACKPINK (Jisoo, Jenni, Rosé, Lisa) has left a strong impression on the music scene. Debuting in June 2016 as YG Entertainment's first girl group in seven years after 2NE1, they immediately gained attention.
Their first album, "SQUARE ONE," featured the hit "Whistle," which topped major domestic music charts and catapulted the group into stardom. Notably, they achieved this feat in just 14 days, setting a new record for the shortest time for a girl group to win a trophy on SBS's "Inkigayo."
Their follow-up title track "Playing with Fire" from "SQUARE TWO" and their first single album "As If It's Your Last" also achieved great success. They won awards at various ceremonies like the Golden Disc Awards and the Melon Music Awards, and topped charts like Melon, Bugs, and Genie. Additionally, BLACKPINK became a sought-after act for university festivals.
The release of their first mini-album "SQUARE UP" in June 2018 played a significant role in solidifying BLACKPINK's position as global stars. The album reached No. 40 on the Billboard 200 chart, while its title track "DDU-DU DDU-DU" ranked No. 55 on the Billboard Hot 100. This made BLACKPINK the second K-pop girl group to enter the Hot 100 after Wonder Girls.
In 2019, they climbed to No. 41 on the Billboard Hot 100 with "Kill This Love." Additionally, they set another new record as the first K-pop girl group to rank on the UK Official Chart for five consecutive weeks. Their song "How You Like That" also achieved meaningful results, reaching No. 33 on the Billboard Hot 100, No. 1 on the iTunes World Song chart in 61 countries, No. 2 on the Spotify Global Top 50, No. 1 on the Amazon Music Global Chart, No. 1 on Japan's Line Music, and No. 44 on the UK Official Singles Chart.
With their first full-length album "THE ALBUM," BLACKPINK broke more records, including achieving No. 2 on the UK Official Album Chart, No. 2 on the Billboard Album Chart, No. 1 on the Spotify Global Album Chart, and becoming the first K-pop girl group to sell over a million copies of a single album (approximately 1.2 million copies). Their second full-length album "BORN PINK" topped the Billboard Main Album Chart and reached No. 1 on the UK Official Album Chart Top 100, making them the first Asian female artists to conquer both charts.
Collaborations with international pop stars also garnered tremendous attention. Their participation in Lady Gaga's track "Sour Candy" from her sixth album "CHROMATICA" charted at No. 33 on the Billboard Hot 100, No. 2 on the Spotify Global Top Chart, and No. 17 on the UK Official Singles Chart. Their collaboration with Selena Gomez, "Ice Cream," entered the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 13, setting a new record for K-pop girl groups.
Moreover, BLACKPINK has achieved numerous milestones, including becoming the first K-pop female artist to perform at the MTV Video Music Awards (VMA) and win the Best Metaverse Performance Award, being nominated for the UK BRIT Awards, and headlining major events like Coachella Valley and Arts Festival. In July, they will headline the prestigious British Summer Time Festival at Hyde Park.
BLACKPINK's YouTube records are equally impressive. They became the first K-pop girl group to reach 100 million views on their music video for "DDU-DU DDU-DU." Recently, they surpassed 30.1 billion accumulated views, making them the artists with the highest number of views on a YouTube music channel. Additionally, they maintain the No. 1 spot for the highest number of subscribers (86.9 million) among girl groups worldwide.
These achievements demonstrate BLACKPINK's immense impact on the global music industry. As they continue to break records and make history, their legacy as a leading K-pop girl group only grows stronger. With an ever-expanding fan base and unwavering support, the future looks incredibly bright for BLACKPINK.
