Unveiling Shadows: K-Pop Celebrities Ryu Phillip, Seo Jung-hee, and Yoo Jae-hwan Open up about Hidden Traumas
Certain stars have come forward to confess that they have been victims of domestic violence. Domestic violence is an ordeal that victims often find challenging to discuss due to the trauma it brings and the desire to avoid drawing attention to themselves. However, by revealing their experiences, these celebrities also raise awareness about domestic violence, and this is why their bravery is being widely appreciated and supported.
Recently, singer Ryu Phillip revealed on Channel A's 'Oh Eun Young's Golden Counseling Center' that he was a victim of domestic violence in the past. He shared, "One day, my father in the United States told us that he would raise us. Not wanting to be a burden to my mother, I ended up moving to the States," he recalled, choked with emotion.
Phillip went on to share that he experienced labor exploitation without earning a single penny. Moreover, his father squandered the family's wealth through gambling. Phillip persevered under the promise that his father would finance his college education, but when it was time for him to attend school, his father promised to hand over a restaurant instead, leading Phillip to run away in the early hours of the morning.
Seo Jung-hee is another figure who shares a similar pain. Her late ex-husband, Seo Se-won, had violently assaulted her during their 30-year marriage, causing significant trauma.
In this regard, Seo Jung-hee stated, "After the divorce, I received psychiatric trauma treatment for a year and a half. It wasn't easy to recover. If my mother hadn't been there for me, I might have made a regrettable decision. I considered escaping or making an extreme choice," indirectly confessing her hardships.
Additionally, Yoo Jae-hwan revealed on a 2021 broadcast, "My parents were two people. One was the best person to me, and the other was the worst. I fear that I might exhibit my father's behavior towards my girlfriend."
He continued, "It's a memory I wanted to forget. I wish it wouldn't resurface, but it stays with me for life. These moments keep repeating, and I think I have a distorted view of men or father figures as a result. That past was so painful, and I tried so hard not to be like my father, I ended up being overly cautious in my relationships. I hated that past so much and didn't want it to return. So, whenever I loved someone, I tried my best to ensure that I didn't mirror my father's image."
Yoo Jae-hwan further hinted at his ongoing struggle by saying, "Looking at how I keep avoiding it, I guess the weight was quite heavy. It was really scary and frightening. It still vividly comes back to me. I worry about whether I could become a lifelong nightmare to someone."
Domestic violence arrives uninvited. Although it's not the victim's fault, it can become a traumatic badge they carry. Stars who have publicly revealed their experiences often hide a sad narrative behind their bright expressions. Now, we hope that they can meet their fans with unshadowed smiles and good news.
