On June 26, an online forum post indicated that international media have reported an early termination of HBO's "The Idol." Initially planned for a six-episode run, the show was intended to extend into a second season based on its ratings and positive feedback.

However, "The Idol" seems to have faltered, garnering only a 24 percent rating among critics and 58 percent approval from audiences, according to Rotten Tomatoes. Responding to rumors about a potential second season, HBO PR clarified in a Twitter post on June 16 that such decisions hadn't yet been made.

The fandom has expressed support for the show's discontinuation, with some expressing surprise that the series was produced at all. They also questioned its selection for the 76th Cannes International Film Festival. Some of the comments from the forum include:
