MAMAMOO's High Heel Performance in Torrential Rain: Artistry or Safety Concern?
K-pop sensation MAMAMOO's decision to perform in high heels amid pouring rain during the 'Jamboree K-pop Concert' has sparked widespread discussion.
The grand finale of the '2023 Saemangeum World Scout Jamboree' titled 'K-pop Super Live' (also known as 'Jamboree Concert') was held on August 11 at the Seoul World Cup Stadium in Mapo-gu, Seoul. The event was broadcasted live on KBS 2TV.
Originally scheduled to take place outdoors in Jeonbuk Buan Saemangeum six days prior, the concert faced multiple changes in its date and venue, leading to confusion. Once the date was finalized to the evening of the 11th, the overlapping schedule caused 'Music Bank' to cancel, and many of its line-up artists joined the 'Jamboree Concert' instead.
Amidst the chaos, several artists who previously expressed difficulty adjusting to the fluctuating concert schedule still voluntarily added their names to the 'Jamboree Concert' roster. Notably, MAMAMOO, with its members signed under three different agencies, made history by performing together.
In the midst of these developments, Hwasa's recent move from RBW to P Nation, as well as Solar and Moonbyul's comeback with the unit group MAMAMOO+, hinted at inevitable schedule adjustments for the 'Jamboree Concert'. Solar even left a message saying, "I got the call," and "I can't believe this is happening."
Although it was significant for all artists to come together, the journey wasn't smooth. Initially, as the 'Jamboree Concert' began, the weather seemed calm, but as night fell, heavy rain began, particularly during MAMAMOO's performance.
While the girl group ITZY, who performed just before MAMAMOO, opted for low-heeled shoes for their dynamic performance, MAMAMOO's choice to dance in high heels amidst the downpour raised concerns for their safety.
While the planned stage concept and outfit styling are completely understandable, there's a lingering question about the necessity of performing in high heels under such potentially dangerous weather conditions. Singing in stilettos in the pouring rain is undoubtedly a challenging feat, even for seasoned artists.
In a similar past situation, singer HyunA had boldly removed her high heels and performed barefoot in the water, which became a hot topic and highlighted her charisma.
Of course, MAMAMOO's 'Jamboree Concert' performance deeply moved many fans and is considered one of the best stages. However, considering MAMAMOO's history of various minor injuries during their career, concerns are growing among fans about the group's safety.
