'Youth Of May' Director Shares Thoughts About The Setting Of The Drama
'Youth of May' director talks about the historical setting in the drama, and Lee Do Hyun and Go Min Si also talk about their roles.
Director Song Min Yeob said that the drama was set in Gwangju back in 1980. The era is about the universal stories of love, hate, and sadness among young people. It is not about a specific incident but about the stories of the people who lived during that time.
Dramas and other genres of the movie have come in a historical distortion. Most of them misrepresent the actual figures and events from Korean history. Director Song Min Yeob said that the drama might set during the historical period, but it is not the central part of the drama.
The drama is more on the universal emotions between love and hate, which was felt by the young people living at that time. It is about what the average person will be doing and choosing when facing unexpected situations.
On the other hand, Lee Do Hyun and Go Min Si previously worked together in a Netflix series, 'Sweet Home.' They played as brother and sister. Go Min Si said that when she read the script for 'Youth of May,' it came into her mind that Lee Do Hyun would best suit the role.
Moreover, she was more surprised knowing that he is part of the cast. They still keep in touch and tell him that the project would be an excellent fit for him. She also learned that day Lee Do Hyun had been one of the favored casting choices.
Lee Do Hyun added that they would be playing characters of the opposite sex attracted to each other. They thought a lot about what approach they will take to make viewers relate their excitement during the shoot.
