Philip Choi Recalls Heartbreaking Cancer Diagnosis of His Son at 3 Months Old: 'I Had Only Seen Cancer on TV'
Actor Philip Choi recently shared the emotional story of his second child's pediatric cancer diagnosis.
In a recent episode of CBS's "Renew Us," actor Philip Choi and his wife, Kwon Eun-hye, made an appearance. The couple, who married in 2017, welcomed a daughter in May 2019 and a son in February 2022. Amidst their happiness, it was revealed that their second son was diagnosed with a malignant liver tumor only 106 days after his birth.
During the broadcast, Choi recalled the situation at the time, tears welling up in his eyes. He said, "Of course, I thought he was growing up healthily. When he was 3 months old, we went to a pediatrician, as he had congenital unilateral hypertrophy. His arms had different thicknesses and lengths."
However, they were advised to visit a larger hospital, where they had further tests done at a university hospital. Choi said, "They told us to get admitted and have the tests done quickly. The ultrasound revealed a malignant tumor." He added, "I had a lot of thoughts at the hospital. I thought I had only seen cancer on TV. When we went to the university hospital, I couldn't help but wonder why I was there and felt a heavy burden."
He also revealed the results of the biopsy. "The tumor was in a difficult area for surgery, and it had grown up to 7cm. They also observed metastasis and diagnosed him with stage 4 cancer. I thought stage 4 meant terminal, and I wondered if there was no treatment available. Fortunately, they said it didn't seem to be aggressive and suggested monitoring it closely," Choi said.
Choi acknowledged that his wife's advice was a great source of strength for him. "My wife said, 'As long as we do our best, everything will be fine.' She was very different from the person I knew before. She was very calm," he said. Kwon Eun-hye added, "His treatment has now ended," revealing that their son has recovered after seven months of treatment.
