Hwasa Undergoes 3-Hour Police Investigation: Will She Face Charges for Indecent Performance?
Hwasa from the group MAMAMOO has been embroiled in a controversy over alleged indecency and has subsequently been investigated by the police.
According to her agency, P Nation, the Seongdong Police Station in Seoul summoned Hwasa as the accused towards the end of last month for an investigation.
Previously, in May, Hwasa performed at the Sungkyunkwan University festival as part of the tvN's 'Traveling Dance Singer' recording. During her performance of "Don't Give It To Me," she showcased a provocative dance move, sparking a debate over its appropriateness.
The controversial move involved licking her hand and then suggestively brushing a specific part of her body.
In response, in July, the civic group Student Parents' Human Rights Solidarity filed a complaint, stating that her actions caused embarrassment and disgust to the public. Hwasa attended the police station and underwent an investigation for approximately three hours.
P Nation commented, "Hwasa cooperated diligently with the investigation."
The police have been looking into the intent and background of the dance move. They plan to determine soon whether the performance was indecent and decide on the next steps.
Meanwhile, ahead of the release of her new song "I Love My Body," Hwasa appeared on singer Sung Si-kyung's YouTube channel. She mentioned the controversy, saying, "I've been in the spotlight for a while due to the indecency issue. My on-stage performance became a topic of debate." She continued, "The level of hate comments was extreme. I've never been so affected by them before, but this time it was different. I cried harder this year than ever before. Tears flowed like a waterfall."
On a related note, the crime of public indecency is established when one commits an obscene act in public. Those found guilty can face up to one year in prison or a fine of up to 5 million won.
