BLACKPINK Shines as 'It Girls' at the US VMAs
Amid the dominant trend of female musicians in the North American pop market, K-pop girl group BLACKPINK has added to the brilliance. BLACKPINK has been nominated in six categories at the '2023 MTV Video Music Awards' (VMA), one of the major US pop music award ceremonies.
According to the nominee list released on September 3 (KST) via the official VMA website, BLACKPINK has secured nominations in major categories including 'Group of the Year', 'Best K-pop', 'Best Choreography', 'Best Art Direction', 'Editing', and 'Show of the Summer', effectively reserving their title as the 'multi-nominee' of the event. Last year, BLACKPINK made history by attending the ceremony and performing their hit song "Pink Venom", marking the first time a K-pop girl group graced the VMA stage.
With BLACKPINK's multiple nominations hinting at a potential sweep, the spotlight is particularly on this year's VMA trend of the 'meteoric rise of female artists'.
Excluding Sam Smith, all musicians nominated in five or more categories are female. BLACKPINK, alongside pop stars Miley Cyrus and Olivia Rodrigo, shares a tie with six nominations each, solidifying their status as the 'dominant girl group' leading global pop. This year, the honor of the most VMA nominations goes to Taylor Swift with nominations in 11 categories.
This year, just like domestic award ceremonies, a plethora of K-pop groups have made their appearance. Global group BTS's Jungkook, BLACKPINK, SEVENTEEN, Stray Kids, aespa, Newjins, TOMORROW X TOGETHER (TXT), and FIFTY FIFTY have all ascended as VMA award nominees. TOMORROW X TOGETHER and FIFTY FIFTY have particularly garnered attention with four and three nominations respectively.
Both Stray Kids and TOMORROW X TOGETHER will be attending the VMAs, set to be held on the 13th at the Prudential Center in New Jersey, and are slated to perform.
