BTS's Influence Evident: Korean Songs Rank Second Among Non-English Tracks in Billboard's Top 10
Thanks to the global success of BTS, a recent study showed that Korean songs rank second among non-English tracks that have entered the top 10 of the US Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.
On August 16 (local time), US music publication Billboard published an article analyzing this trend.
Since the introduction of the 'Hot 100' chart in 1958, only 35 non-English songs have made it into the top 10.
Spanish leads the way with 19 songs, followed by Korean with 8 songs. German songs were next with 3, then French and Italian each with 2, and Japanese with just 1.
BigHit Music, BTS's label, commented on this achievement, "The 'Hot 100' chart factors in streaming, conversion figures from music and album sales, and local radio airplay in the US, making it a challenging chart for non-English songs to enter. The strong performance of Korean songs can largely be credited to BTS, the flagship artist of K-pop."
BTS alone has brought 6 Korean songs into the 'Hot 100' top 10: "FAKE LOVE", "Boy With Luv", "ON", "Life Goes On", their collaboration with Coldplay titled "My Universe", and member Jimin's solo "Like Crazy".
Outside of BTS, PSY succeeded in entering the 'Hot 100' top 10 with his global hits "Gangnam Style" and "GENTLEMAN".
Remarkably, among non-English songs, only 10 have achieved the number 1 spot. BTS made history by placing three of these at the top: "Life Goes On", "My Universe", and "Like Crazy".
"Life Goes On" holds the record as the first non-English song to debut at number 1 on the 'Hot 100' in its first week of release.
Billboard pointed out that "Of the non-English songs that made it to the 'Hot 100' top 10, 23 appeared after PSY's 'Gangnam Style' in 2012. This trend highlights the onset of music globalization led by hits from BTS and Latin pop star Bad Bunny."
