EXO's Chen Prepares for October Wedding Amidst Chilly Fan Response
EXO's Chen is set to tie the knot after announcing his marriage three years ago. However, the reaction from fans remains frosty.
On the 16th, his agency SM Entertainment revealed to EXsports News, "Chen will be holding his wedding ceremony in October that had previously been postponed due to certain circumstances."
Back in January 2020, SM Entertainment confirmed, "Chen has met someone special and will be getting married. The bride-to-be is not a celebrity, and the wedding will be a quiet affair attended only by both families. In respect of the families' wishes, all matters related to the wedding will remain private."
At that time, Chen informed fans of his impending marriage through a handwritten letter, sharing, "We have received a blessing. It was quite surprising, but this blessing has given me more strength," hinting at his then-fiancée's pregnancy. Some fans expressed concerns that the premarital pregnancy news might tarnish EXO's image and even demanded Chen's departure from the group.
SM Entertainment, addressing the issue, conveyed, "Before the marriage announcement, all EXO members expressed that they wanted to stay together. We respect the opinions of our artists, and there will be no changes to EXO's lineup," showing firm support.
Three months later, in April 2020, Chen became a father to a baby girl. That October, Chen enlisted for mandatory military service. Photos from his training camp and his daughter's first birthday celebration later became significant talking points. During his military service, Chen became a father to a second daughter in January of the following year.
Despite waiting three years to hold his wedding ceremony, Chen still faces negative reactions from some fans. Especially given the recent discord between CHENBAEKXI (Baekhyun, Xiumin, Chen) and SM Entertainment, some fans reacted to the wedding news with skepticism, questioning, "How many times is he going to deceive us?"
Yet, others argue, "Why does it matter? Chen isn't making a big show of his wedding. Considering the back-to-back births of his two daughters and the overlap with COVID-19, it makes sense he couldn't hold a wedding." They've sent messages of support as well.
In a related story, last June, CHENBAEKXI had notified SM Entertainment of their desire to terminate their contracts, citing slave contracts and unclear settlements. However, both parties later stated, "We were able to come to a mutual agreement and resolve misunderstandings," maintaining their contract relations.
