Controversy Hits: Webtoon Artist Joo Ho-min Min's Segment Postponed Amid Child Abuse Allegations
Webtoon artist Joo Ho-min's regular segment on 'Bae Sung Jae's Ten' titled 'Comfortable Small Talk Judgment' has been put on hold, a move that seems conscious of the harsh public scrutiny towards Joo Ho-min. He currently faces criticism for hastily reporting a special education teacher, who was in charge of his autistic son, on charges of child abuse.
According to Star News on the 27th, the segment of SBS Power FM's 'Bae Sung Jae's Ten' scheduled for 10 PM on the 29th, has been postponed. 'Comfortable Small Talk Judgment' is a section where stories are shared about whether one is a small talker, with Joo Ho-min and Imalnyeon as regular panelists.
According to the weekly schedule listed on the SBS homepage, this segment which meets with the audience twice a month, was scheduled for broadcast on the 29th, which is a Saturday. Accordingly, the production team had pre-recorded the segment on the 19th with DJ Bae Sung Jae, panelists Joo Ho-min, and Imalnyeon.
However, contrary to the initial plan, 'Comfortable Small Talk Judgment' is not expected to air on this day. Instead, the production team has proceeded to record the 29th broadcast with special DJ Nucksal and guest Short Sun, along with the Sunshine corner. The change in programming comes amid a controversy over Joo Ho-min reporting Mr. A, a special education teacher who was teaching his son, to the police. DJ Bae Sung Jae is temporarily away due to his commentary schedule for the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
There are interpretations that this is a measure by the production team, conscious of negative public opinion towards Joo Ho-min. On the SBS homepage viewer forum, there have been strong voices requesting to edit Joo Ho-min's appearance on SBS's 'Tale of a Tail'. Joo Ho-min is facing backlash for trying to punish Mr. A on charges of child abuse.
Although Joo Ho-min appeared unedited in the broadcast of 'Tale of a Tail' that day, the side of 'Tale of a Tail' carefully stated, "We will make our best efforts to minimize any discomfort for the viewers" as if conscious of the controversy.
The tvN's 'Ramen Old Summer Camp', where Joo Ho-min joined as a regular member, is also in a difficult situation with its first broadcast scheduled for August 4th. The production team is currently reviewing whether to edit Joo Ho-min and dealing with related matters.
As the 'Bae Sung Jae's Ten' team has temporarily postponed the 'Comfortable Small Talk Judgment', where Joo Ho-min appears as a regular panelist, it is garnering attention as to what decisions other programs will make.
Earlier, it was revealed on the 26th that Joo Ho-min had reported Mr. A to the police on suspicion of abusing his son.
Before the incident in September last year, his son had been separated from his class after pulling down his pants in front of a female student. Joo Ho-min explained on his YouTube channel on the 27th, "Since last September, our child was separated into a special class due to a sudden behavior, and was educated all day in a special class. But he has shown very anxious and fearful reactions since the day of the incident, and even refused to go to school."
In order to understand the exact situation, it was revealed that a recording device was put in his son's bag to collect evidence. Joo Ho-min conveyed, "As a developmentally disabled child in the second grade of elementary school, precise communication was impossible, and only disabled children received classes in special classes, so there was no way to receive the situation, but verification was necessary."
However, other parents and fellow teachers are reported to defend Mr. A, arguing that there was no child abuse. This aligns with the recent social issue of infringement of teacher's rights, causing controversy. Some point out that Joo Ho-min's response was excessive.
Meanwhile, Mr. A was dismissed from his position due to Joo Ho-min's report and is now on trial on charges of violating the Special Act on the Punishment of Child Abuse Crimes.
Joo Ho-min said, "I am sorry for the great trouble caused to other parents as the teacher's duties have been suspended. You would have petitioned too. I wanted to inform you of these circumstances, but it was not easy. Since the trial is ongoing, please wait until the verdict is out on whether the teacher's actions were legitimate discipline or abuse against a developmentally disabled child."
