MAMAMOO's Hwasa Faces Public Indecency Accusations Over Performance Choreography
Hwasa of the girl group MAMAMOO has once again found herself at the center of controversy, following allegations that her choreography is obscene and violates public indecency laws.
According to the police on the 10th, the Seongdong Police Station in Seoul has initiated an investigation after Hwasa was reported by a civic group, the Student Parent Human Rights Federation (SPHRF), for suspected public indecency.
SPHRF representative Shin Min-hyang emphasized in an interview with Xportsnews, "We're a parents' group, but rather than considering the parents' standpoint, we've determined that the act itself is illegal and falls under public indecency. We decided to file the report after a thorough consultation with a lawyer."
SPHRF filed the report because they believe that the performance Hwasa presented at the Sungkyunkwan University festival on May 12 was inappropriate for a festival performance and caused public embarrassment.
In particular, the SPHRF held a press conference on June 22 to announce their filing of public indecency charges against Hwasa. They criticized, "Her actions were enough to induce feelings of shame and disgust in the audience."
Moreover, SPHRF claimed in their complaint, "Hwasa's actions were suggestive of perverted sexual relations and were enough to cause feelings of embarrassment in the audience. The behavior was out of context with the choreography and cannot be interpreted as artistic behavior."
P NATION, Hwasa's agency, expressed a cautious stance on the issue in an interview with Xportsnews, saying, "We understand that the police are currently reviewing the case."
During a college festival in May, Hwasa performed 'Don't Give it to Me' with Loco. During the performance, Hwasa was seen spreading her legs, squatting, sweeping her tongue with her hand, and making a gesture that involves brushing up certain parts of her body. As videos of the performance circulated, a debate sparked over the appropriateness of the choreography.
