Full Reevaluation Ordered in Yoo Ah-in's Drug Case: Dismissal of Arrest Warrant Raises Eyebrows
The prosecution is set to undertake a comprehensive review of the case involving Yoo Ah-in, who is suspected of using more than seven types of narcotics.
According to legal circles on the 4th, the Serious Crimes Investigation Department of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office (Chief Prosecutor Shin Jun-ho) has decided to comprehensively reassess the drug case of Yoo Ah-in handed over from the police.
On the same day, a prosecutor told News1, "It is somewhat puzzling that the arrest warrant was dismissed even though he allegedly used more than seven types of drugs. We have decided to conduct a full re-investigation."
Currently, Yoo Ah-in is accused of using a total of more than seven types of drugs, including propofol, marijuana, cocaine, ketamine, zolpidem, and the psychotropic drugs midazolam and alprazolam. Despite this, the court's rejection of Yoo Ah-in's arrest warrant is deemed by the prosecution to be beyond common sense.
Previously, Yoo Ah-in appeared in the Seoul Central District Court in Seocho-gu, Seoul on May 24 for a pre-trial examination of the suspect, telling reporters, "I acknowledge a significant part of the charges," but also said, "I did not try to aid a co-offender's escape."
However, Yoo Ah-in's arrest warrant was rejected. At that time, Judge Lee Min-soo of the Seoul Central District Court, who is in charge of the arrest warrant, explained the reason for rejecting Yoo Ah-in's arrest warrant, saying, "It is difficult to recognize the reason and necessity for detention. A significant number of evidences related to the crime have already been secured, and the suspect also acknowledges a significant part of the basic factual relationship. He also regrets smoking marijuana, and it is necessary to ensure his right to defend himself, as the use of cocaine cannot be completely ruled out."
Afterwards, as he left the Mapo Police Station in Seoul, Yoo Ah-in said, "I respect and appreciate the court's decision," and regarding the charge of cocaine use, he responded, "It is difficult to talk about the fact through the media. I will sincerely handle the remaining procedures."
Initially, Yoo Ah-in was accused of using five types of drugs, but on the 9th of last month, he was suspected of additionally taking the psychotropic drugs midazolam and alprazolam and was transferred to the prosecution without detention. Midazolam is a type of sleep anesthetic similar to propofol, and alprazolam is known as a nerve stabilizer used for insomnia or depression treatment.
In addition, it was reported that YouTuber Mr. Yang fled to France to avoid police investigation related to Yoo Ah-in's drug case. The police are looking into whether Yoo Ah-in indirectly delivered money by confirming the fact that a friend of Yoo Ah-in supported Yang financially during his escape.
However, on the 11th of last month, Yang wrote on his personal SNS, "Everything related to me is different from the truth. I am not overseas to flee. The reason I came here is because I had to stop my dance troupe last year and I am here for a dance workshop, a new attempt on YouTube, and research for the choreography of 'Decameron' I will do next year." He added, "It is absurd and I also need clear confirmation of these details that I have become a suspect and treated as a criminal just because I went abroad. I haven't even been investigated."
Yang also added, "If I had fled overseas, how could I have posted my daily life on YouTube and SNS. Also, I was unable to even properly contact my older brother involved in the case, and I never received any financial support or help from him. It's common sense that he has nothing to gain by helping me escape. I can only think that the story that he is helping me escape is absurd. I am suffering a lot in relation to this issue."
