Choi Yena Makes a Spirited Comeback on 'Inkigayo' Amid 'Hate Rodrigo' Controversy
Singer Choi Yena showed signs of regaining her health during her recent performance on 'Inkigayo'.
On the afternoon of July 2, Choi Yena appeared on the SBS music program 'Inkigayo' and presented her new song 'Hate Rodrigo'.
Dressed in a yellow top and checkered skirt, Choi energetically performed on stage, energetically tossing her pink pigtails.
While performing live, she motivated her fans, known as 'Earthlings', with ad-lib comments and synced with the rhythm of the song. Throughout the performance of 'Hate Rodrigo', Choi maintained a bright expression and actions.
Her appearance caught attention as she had taken a day off following her non-participation in the post-recording of MBC's 'Show! Music Core' on July 1. Her agency, Yuehua Entertainment, announced the cancellation of her post-recording for 'Show! Music Core' that day, but added that her stage performance would still be broadcast since it had already been pre-recorded.
Previously, on June 30, Yuehua Entertainment informed via a fan cafe that the post-recording for 'Show! Music Core' was cancelled due to Choi's poor health condition. The company requested fans for understanding due to the frequent changes in the schedule and promised to do their best for the artist's recovery.
Some speculated that the stress from the controversy surrounding her new song 'Hate Rodrigo' may have contributed to her ill health. Choi released her second single 'Hate Rodrigo' on June 27. The title track of the single, as explained, expresses her cute jealousy towards the envied American pop star Olivia Rodrigo as "I hate everyone who is doing better than me".
While Choi explained during her single release showcase that she expressed her harmless jealousy towards her wannabe in a non-irritating manner, some pointed out that it was inappropriate to include the word 'Hate', with its strong negative connotation, along with another artist's real name in the title.
The music video for 'Hate Rodrigo' also faced accusations of plagiarism, leading to it being made private on June 29. Yuehua Entertainment explained that it was made private due to the discovery of potential infringements of trademark rights, portrait rights, and copyrights, and that they are currently modifying the video. They also clarified that it was not made private due to a request from Olivia Rodrigo's side.
Meanwhile, that day's 'Inkigayo' included performances by Kim Sung Kyu, Kim Jae Hwan, THE NEW SIX, Lapillus, LUN8, SHINee, &TEAM, ATEEZ, 8TURN, YENA (Choi Yena), WEi, UKISS, +(KR)ystal Eyes, TREASURE (T5), Hi-Fi Un!corn, and Han Seung Woo.
For the first week of July, Jisoo's 'Flower', aespa's 'Spicy', and Leseraphim's 'Eve, Psyche, and the Wife of Blue Beard' were nominated for first place, with Jisoo securing the win.
