K-Pop Star Sana of TWICE Courts Controversy Over Perceived Weight Loss and Image Shift
Recently, a leaked TikTok video featuring Sana, a member of K-pop sensation TWICE, has stirred significant reactions from fans, provoking discourse about the singer's noticeable physical transformation.
The viral video clip, shot during the group's "READY TO BE" world tour in Dallas on June 21, displayed Sana's new svelte figure in a chic black ensemble - high-waisted shorts paired with a sleeveless top that accentuated her shoulders. Her long black hair and lean legs added to the charm that fans believe has been amplified by her weight loss.
This visual transformation triggered extensive comparisons among the TWICE fandom (known as ONCEs) between the singer's rookie debut image and her current physique. When Sana entered the K-pop scene, she quickly gained popularity as a symbol of endearing charm with her plump cheeks and infectious eye smile, earning comparisons to a bunny and chipmunk.
However, the new video spotlighted a noticeable shift in Sana's image, from cute to sultry. Her once full cheeks now appear more sculpted, projecting a more mature, seductive persona. This transition sparked intense reactions from fans.
Social media was ablaze with comments about Sana's transformation. A majority of fans commended her new physique, showering her with compliments such as "She looks like a queen now," and "Sana looks so pretty." Several posts highlighted her diligent fitness routine, referencing fellow band member Jihyo's mention of Sana's night workouts during their concerts abroad.
However, not everyone viewed Sana's transformation favorably. Some fans expressed nostalgia for her trademark chubby cheeks and exuded concern for her health, reflecting the broader concern about potentially harmful weight loss practices prevalent in the K-pop industry. Comments ranged from "Sana, why did you lose so much weight?" to "She's pretty, but she's prettier with a little bit of fat."
Fans also speculated about the demanding nature of TWICE's current schedule, which included preparing for the "READY TO BE" tour, working on a new album, debut unit preparation, commercials, pictorials, and concert practice. They encouraged Sana to prioritize her health amid the rigorous workload.
Currently, TWICE is in the middle of their fifth world tour "READY TO BE," set to perform in 14 cities across Australia, Japan, and North America. The tour is deemed the group's most ambitious project yet, featuring six stadium performances among its 17 shows.
