Choi Yena's 'Hate Rodrigo' Track Stirs Speculation: An Affront or Homage to Olivia Rodrigo?
In the run-up to Choi Yena's return to the music arena with her second single album "HATE XX," speculations are rife about a potential reference to global pop sensation, Olivia Rodrigo, in her title track.
The former IZ*ONE member and now solo artist, Yena, is all set to wow K-pop fans with her comeback on June 27. This follows her last release, "Love War," which was unveiled in January.
On June 21, Yena piqued fan interest with the release of two lyric posters on her official social media platforms. This sneak peek offered fans a lyrical overview of the upcoming album.
The title track, "Hate Rodrigo," features (G)I-DLE's Yuqi and presents lyrics hinting at an admiring jealousy toward a star, as expressed in the line: "Oh my god! You're my star / I'm not jealousy Rodrigo'". The second poster reveals part of the lyrics from "WICKED LOVE," another track from the album.
While fans are eagerly awaiting Yena's upcoming release, the title track "Hate Rodrigo" has already stirred debate prior to its official launch. Some music enthusiasts have questioned if the title is a veiled reference to American singer-songwriter Olivia Rodrigo.
Fueling these speculations are the visuals from the teaser video for "Hate Rodrigo." The video displays Yena in a retro get-up, donning a colorful printed scarf as a hood, tinted sunglasses, and sporting pink hair - exuding a hip vibe.
Notably, a scene featuring Yena eating ice cream while driving mirrors one from Olivia Rodrigo's music video for "Deja vu". Additionally, a backdrop picture of Olivia from her "SOUR" era features in a scene with Yena and Yuqi. Even a picture of Yena bears a striking resemblance to one of Olivia's.
These apparent parallels have led some netizens to question if "Hate Rodrigo" is a dig at Olivia Rodrigo, sparking further curiosity about any potential tension between the two artists.
However, Yena's company swiftly debunked such speculations, suggesting that the album serves more as a tribute to the global star rather than an offensive gesture. "The title song 'Hate Rodrigo' is a track that expresses the cute jealousy of 'I hate all people who are better than me!' and Choi Yena participated in writing and composing herself, proving her color."
Yena's supporters also chimed in, defending the singer by highlighting Olivia Rodrigo's significant influence on Yena's musical direction, negating the possibility of Yena criticizing Rodrigo.
"HATE XX," featuring three captivating tracks, including "Hate Rodrigo," "BAD HOBBY," and "WICKED LOVE," is set to release on June 27 at 6 p.m. KST.
