Pop-Opera Singer Choi Sung Bong: Death Follows Controversy Over False Cancer Claims and Fraudulent Donations
Pop-opera singer Choi Sung Bong, who had previously hinted at taking his own life, was found dead at the age of 33.
According to the police on June 21 (KST), Choi Sung Bong was found deceased at his home in Yeoksam-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul at 9:41 am the day before. The police suspect that Choi made an extreme choice and are determining the exact circumstances.
At the time, police and fire departments responded to a report and forcibly opened the door of his home to confirm the death.
Choi Sung Bong, a pop-opera singer and vocalist, made a name for himself among viewers when he was the runner-up on the tvN audition program 'Korea's Got Talent' broadcasted in 2011. At the time, Choi Sung Bong was known to have lived a disadvantaged life, laboring from the age of five after leaving an orphanage, but he never gave up on his dream of becoming a vocalist, a story that touched many.
However, Choi Sung Bong came under fire in 2021 when it was revealed that he had lied about battling terminal cancer to raise donation money. Caught in the controversy, he acknowledged the false cancer battle in October of the same year and promised to return the donations he had received.
After not being in the public eye for a while, Choi Sung Bong posted on his YouTube channel on the 20th, implying an extreme choice, writing, "If this message is seen, I am already dead."
Choi Sung Bong wrote, "I have received a lot of attention and love from many people from 2011 to now. I sincerely thank and appreciate you. Although I wanted to express my frustration in this last letter, the love I have received over the years is greater, so I decided to bury it in my heart."
He continued, "I sincerely apologize to those who were hurt by my foolish mistakes, and I was wrong again and again. I have refunded everyone who has inquired about returning donations over the past two years. Now I am going to pay for my sins with my life."
He also wrote, "Looking back, I've tried to live a normal life to the best of my ability from a young age, but in the end, I couldn't."
He added, "Even though my breath stops now, I have no regrets about the journey of my brilliant life. I have lived to the fullest and strived for happiness every day. I am 34 years old. This life may have been tragic, but I hope to conclude my life happily in the next life."
He repeatedly expressed, "I sincerely apologize to the many people who have been harmed because of me and will pay for my sins with this life." He also expressed his feelings, saying, "I am sorry to the many people who helped me. I think I endured as long as I could."
