BTS Jin's 'The Astronaut' Soars Again: Secures Spot in Billboard's Top Three and Sets K-Pop Solo Record
BTS Jin's track, 'The Astronaut', is shining bright once more, reentering the U.S. Billboard charts, solidifying its global popularity. Jin's debut solo track 'The Astronaut' has reclaimed its position at number three on the Billboard 'World Digital Song Sales Chart', two months after its initial release.
Released in October last year, 'The Astronaut' set an impressive record by staying on the charts for 15 weeks, the longest duration for a K-Pop solo track over the past decade. The song tied with BTS' 'Yet To Come', which also held the record for the longest-charting K-Pop song of 2022. As a result, Jin has made a name for himself as a K-Pop artist who has secured the longest-charting position in the 'World Digital Song Sales Chart' both as a group and as a solo artist.
Following Jin's 'The Astronaut' and its 15-week record are PSY's 'That That' with 12 weeks, Jungkook's 'Dreamers', and Lisa's 'Lalisa' each with 10 weeks on the chart.
Upon its release on October 28th last year, 'The Astronaut' debuted at number one on the 'World Digital Song Sales Chart', maintaining its position for three consecutive weeks. This record stands as the longest number one duration for a K-Pop solo within the past decade. Additionally, it held a spot in the top ten for 13 of its 15 weeks on the chart, demonstrating its dominating presence.
Apart from his work with BTS, Jin has proved his immense popularity as a solo artist by topping the chart with three solo tracks: 'Yours', 'Super Tuna', and 'The Astronaut'.
'The Astronaut' made a notable debut in the 'Digital Song Sales' chart last year, selling 44,000 copies in the first week, making it the fifth-highest debut among all songs released in 2022. This initial data landed it at 58th on the U.S. Billboard's 2022 'Digital Song Sales' year-end chart, making it the only K-Pop solo song on the list.
Moreover, 'The Astronaut' debuted at number one on the 'Digital Song Sales' chart, setting the record for the longest consecutive charting of a K-Pop solo song. The 'Global 200' chart saw the track selling 62,000 copies, setting a record for the highest debut sales for a Korean solo track, maintaining its chart position for four consecutive weeks.
'The Astronaut' debuted at number 51 on the Billboard Hot 100, setting the record for the highest debut ranking for a K-Pop artist. The track charted on the Billboard 'Excluding U.S. Global' chart for five consecutive weeks and debuted at number one on the Billboard 'Emerging Artists' chart, maintaining its position for three consecutive weeks.
In Japan's Billboard Japan 'Hot 100', Jin's 'The Astronaut' achieved the highest rank among Korean solo tracks released in the past decade, landing at number four. In Billboard Japan's year-end 'Top Single Sales' chart, the track, released just a month prior, secured the 49th position, the only Korean song to do so.
'The Astronaut' also topped iTunes Top Songs charts in 104 countries, and notably in the United States, it claimed the top position in a record time of one hour and 23 minutes for a K-Pop solo track.
'The Astronaut' by Jin also achieved the status of a 'Million Seller' on 'Circle Chart' as the first single album, registering the second-highest annual sales in 2022 as a solo artist. On the 'Hanteo Chart', it recorded 770,000 sales, setting the record for the highest first-week sales for a male solo single. In Japan, it achieved the golden certification in 2022 as the first Korean solo track to do so.
