ENHYPEN's New Choreography Ruffles Feathers, Fans Divided Over Female Dancer Inclusion
The fandom of the idol group ENHYPEN is stirring due to the inclusion of a pair choreography in their latest performance.
On May 22, ENHYPEN released their fourth mini-album 'DARK BLOOD' along with the title track 'Bite Me,' marking their comeback after a whopping 10-month hiatus since July last year.
The unveiled 'Bite Me' performance was confirmed to include a part of the pair choreography. This includes female dancers paired with the members, a format scarcely seen in recent idol performances, which is garnering attention.
However, the majority of reactions view this as a regression rather than a breakthrough. The dancer's gaze and significant roles in the performance overshadowed the members to the point of seeming reminiscent of a co-ed group, which is being criticized for congesting the stage and overshadowing the actual members. The provocative choreography and costumes are seen as clashing with the sentiment of the idol fandom. There has also been disappointment expressed about the performance feeling somewhat outdated.
The inclusion of underage members in ENHYPEN has particularly intensified the backlash. Some fans have even staged truck protests in front of the HYBE headquarters, calling for the deletion and disposal of the pair choreography. On the other hand, some argue that demanding the deletion of the performance is overreach, causing a rift in the domestic and international fandom alike.
Such a divided reaction is a painful situation for not only the members who worked hard for the performance's perfection, but also for the fandom who eagerly awaited their comeback. This highlights the criticism that the agency failed to properly interpret the main fandom's demand. As of now, Belift Lab and HYBE have yet to make any official statement, and it remains to be seen what response the agency will provide.
