Love Laughs at Past Declarations: Stars Redefine 'Type' in the Face of True Romance
"It's not about age. It's not about looks. It's what's inside that counts."
Does love make all else powerless, even past public declarations? It appears so, as love has rendered even these celebrities' previous statements insignificant. Celebrities who previously claimed to avoid dating younger partners are now engaged in romances with significant age gaps. Those who claimed not to care about physical appearance now bloom in love with some of Korea's most handsome men.
On May 22, news broke that Yubin, former member of Wonder Girls, is dating South Korea's star tennis player, Kwon Soon-woo. Her agency coolly confirmed the relationship.
Yet, Yubin stated last year on the SBS entertainment program, 'Straight to Love', "I've never dated someone younger." She left room for interpretation, saying, "I wouldn't know since I've never dated someone younger. I think it's fine if we get along well and the age difference isn't too large."
Yubin, born in 1988, and Kwon Soon-woo, born in 1997, make a couple with a 9-year age gap. Since Yubin has said that a significant age difference wouldn't bother her, this gap seems surmountable.
This isn't an isolated incident of past declarations not matching current romantic pursuits.
Won Bin and Hyun Bin, Korea's representative handsome actors, both married women who had previously maintained on various shows that they "don't look at appearances" - Lee Na-young and Son Ye-jin respectively.
Lee Na-young stated on the MBC entertainment program 'Infinite Challenge' that looks hardly accounted for anything when choosing a partner. She also claimed in another broadcast, "I really don't care about looks. I think I would dislike it if he were too handsome. What if he cheated?"
However, the man she married in 2005 was none other than Won Bin. Netizens then revisited Lee Na-young's past comments, saying, "She said she doesn't care about looks, not that she dislikes handsome men."
Son Ye-jin, who married the handsome actor Hyun Bin in March last year, stated in past broadcasts that she "does not look at appearances," preferring someone she can have good conversations with, someone who can read her expressions and understand her feelings.
Of course, if a man can hold good conversations and possesses impeccable character, and happens to be handsome, there would be no reason to refuse. The birth of such well-matched couples has elicited congratulatory messages mixed with envy from fans.
Go So-young, who married Jang Dong-gun, went one step further. She had previously stated that she values character more than appearance. She even once stated on SBS's 'Late Night TV Entertainment,' "Handsome men make me feel burdened. I don't look at the face at all."
Actress Shin Min-ah, who has been openly dating actor Kim Woo-bin for nine years, is no different. Before their relationship, she stated that she 'does not look at appearance,' preferring kind, considerate, and warm-hearted people. Then she met Kim Woo-bin!
Actress Lim Ji-yeon, who acknowledged her official relationship with co-star Lee Do-hyun, five years her junior, on 'The Glory,' also joined the ranks of beautiful stars whose past remarks became insignificant. In a previous interview with a media outlet, she said, "I don't look at appearance. A warm person with good character is enough," and "It's hard to date a good-looking man if we don't click," echoing the sentiment of past declarations being overruled in the face of true love.
