Hwasa's Performance Controversy: 'Being a Cool Woman' and Vulgarity are Not the Same
MAMAMOO's Hwasa is in the hot seat for her performance that has stirred up indecency debate.
On May 12, Hwasa performed MAMAMOO's hit songs and "Don't Give It to Me," a collaboration with Loco, at the Sungkyunkwan University festival. During her performance, Hwasa made a motion of running her hand near her tongue and then over a specific part of her body. After the video was released, a heated debate broke out online.
The main argument is that Hwasa's performance crossed the line. Despite being a college festival, it was an open space accessible to people of all ages. In addition to being inappropriate for such a venue, some viewers also reacted that it was not merely sexy but veered into vulgarity.
Interestingly, this performance was part of the filming for tvN's "Dance Singer Band."
Hwasa has been loved for her so-called 'girl crush' charm, confidently and unabashedly showcasing her appeal wherever she goes. However, at the same time, she has occasionally been engulfed in controversy over her sometimes excessive outfits and performances.
In the past, Hwasa stated on MBC's "Radio Star," "I never think I'm too much. I prepare thinking it's part of the stage, and people around me tell me when it's too much. I'd rather not wear something if it's going to be half-hearted."
Her conviction reflects an artist's admirable aim to create the best stage performance considering how to dress and perform. However, it's also true that there should be a clear line.
The performance Hwasa showed that day diverges from the confident sexiness she usually exhibits. Being a 'cool woman' does not necessarily have to mean showcasing suggestive poses on stage.
In reality, Hwasa delivered a fiery and impressive performance at the festival that day. With her attractive vocal color, solid live performance, and stage manners that dominated the scene, the audience was also fascinated by Hwasa's charm.
She was able to heat up the venue without any excessive performance. However, the response to her performance that day was concluded with criticism of being 'vulgar' due to her over-the-top act. It is an error for which no one else can be blamed.
