From Revealing Outfits to Explicit Gestures: Hwasa's Ongoing 'Provocative Performance' Controversies
MAMAMOO's Hwasa's provocative performances have once again stirred controversy. Critics argue that this time, she has crossed the line between art and obscenity.
Recently, Hwasa graced the festival stage of Sungkyunkwan University alongside Lee Hyori and Kim Wan-sun, as part of a recording for tvN's 'Dancing Singer Troupe.' Hwasa filled the stage with enthusiasm as she performed MAMAMOO's 'Decalcomanie' and 'Hip,' followed by her duet with Loco, 'Don't.'
However, the controversial performance emerged during 'Don't.' Dressed in tight black shorts and a top, Hwasa sat with her legs spread, licking her hand and touching a specific part of her body.
After the fan-cam of the performance circulated, netizens pointed out that Hwasa's performance this time was too much, claiming it was an inappropriate and suggestive performance for a university festival. Netizens reacted with comments such as, "What was she thinking?" "It's off-putting," and "She's gone too far." Yet, there were also many netizens who defended Hwasa, arguing that it was just a performance.
This is not the first time Hwasa has been involved in a controversy over her sexual performances. At the '2018 MAMA,' she sparked controversy by wearing a tight red leather bodysuit. While some respected Hwasa's daring concept, many thought it was too much.
In response, Hwasa expressed her position through her broadcasts and songs. Appearing on MBC's 'Radio Star,' Hwasa said, "When preparing for a stage, I often think, 'I want to wear this outfit,' so my stylist creates it. I don't usually think it's too much. So, it's usually others around me who think it's too much and control it. I believe it's a part of the stage. I'd rather not wear it if it's going to be half-hearted." She further stated, "Rather than what clothes I'm wearing, I think about what I should wear to look cool on stage and if I can pull it off."
Hwasa continued to sport daring outfits that drew applause for her cool responses. In 2020, as a member of the project group Refund Expedition in MBC's 'Hangout with Yoo,' she once again became the talk of the town by wearing a nude-tone illusion outfit on the way to 'Music Core.'
Hwasa has emerged as a new trendsetter. Everything she eats, from tripe to fried kimchi pancakes, becomes sold out, making her the center of attention. Her influence on the public is significant. However, Hwasa has become the subject of repeated controversies over sexual performances. While she has received praise for skirting the line between art and obscenity, the dominant view is that this controversy has crossed the line. Perhaps it's time for Hwasa, who claims "I don't care, it's just action," to acknowledge her influence and consider some level of restraint.
