Former EXO Member Kris Wu's Drama 'The Golden Hairpin' to Resume Filming with New Lead After Underage Sexual Assault Scandal
Former EXO member Kris (Wu Yifan) is currently in jail on charges of sexual assault, and his lead role in a drama, which was suspended from airing, is set to resume filming with a new actor.
On May 10, Taiwanese media ETtoday reported that the historical drama 'The Golden Hairpin' would restart filming after being temporarily halted due to Kris' controversy.
The production team for 'The Golden Hairpin' has secured a male actor to replace Kris and has already begun shooting confidentially. The director remains unchanged, and while originally planned as a 60-episode series, some scenes have been removed, and it will now be a 40-episode series.
Kris was arrested in 2020 on charges of drugging and sexually assaulting a minor during auditions and fan meetings. The woman who first exposed Kris' misdeeds claimed, "Kris never used contraception during sex, and he never fulfilled his promise to support the victims in the entertainment industry." She added, "There are more than seven victims, including minors," causing shock.
In relation to this, a Chinese court sentenced Kris to 13 years in prison in November last year, followed by deportation from China upon completion of his sentence.
As a result, the Chinese entertainment industry quickly severed ties with Kris, and the Chinese Drama Association issued a statement saying, "Kris has had a negative impact on the industry." Notably, his first drama 'The Golden Hairpin' had completed filming but was canceled from airing. The production of 'The Golden Hairpin' reportedly cost around 40 billion KRW.
Meanwhile, Kris debuted as a member of EXO but withdrew after filing a lawsuit against SM Entertainment in 2013, seeking confirmation of the non-existence of his exclusive contract.
