Jeon Do-yeon: 'I Wanted to Show There's More to Me'
Jeon Do-yeon has received acting recognition both domestically and internationally as South Korea's representative actress, from the Grand Bell Awards, Blue Dragon Film Awards, Buil Film Awards, Chunsa Film Art Awards, Baeksang Arts Awards, to the Cannes Film Festival. Known as the "Melo Queen" and a strong actress in dramas, Jeon Do-yeon recently challenged herself in the action genre with the Netflix film "Kill Boksoon."
In a recent interview at a café in Jongno-gu, Seoul, Jeon Do-yeon stated, "I don't think the public doubts my acting abilities as Jeon Do-yeon. However, there are still many things I haven't tried, and people say I'm 'at my peak' at some point." She emphasized, "More than a challenge, I wanted to show those who think 'What more can Jeon Do-yeon do?' that I'm an actress capable of doing this as well."
In the movie, the protagonist Gill Bok-soon is a single mother raising a teenage daughter. Directed by Byun Sung-hyun, who also directed 'The Merciless' and 'The Kingmaker,' Jeon Do-yeon collaborated with actors like Sul Kyung-gu, Lee Som, and Gu Gyo-hwan. To portray Gill Bok-soon, a mother and killer, Jeon Do-yeon trained in action for more than four hours a day for four months and managed her diet and weight training simultaneously.
Jeon Do-yeon shared, "I didn't want to regret it later, and I wanted to give my best to my choice. If I had known how hard action was, fear would have come first, but I didn't know, and I thought, 'Why not do it?'" She added, "I thought I had to overcome my own limits, and there was a moment when I actually felt those limits, and I wanted to overcome them."
As an actress raising a middle school daughter, Jeon Do-yeon found it not too difficult to immerse herself in Gil Boksoon's 'double life.' She said, "I still don't know how to balance my life as an actress and a mother, but when I'm not working, I focus on my role as a mother." She added, "I talk to my daughter clearly about the things I can't do or don't know, and I tend to ask for help."
Jeon Do-yeon continued, "I always say I'm a great person, but my daughter didn't believe me until recently. She seems to be proud of me now that I'm on 'You Quiz on the Block' and in the newspapers. I live with the person who ignores me the most in the world," she laughed.
Perhaps it's her passion that made a difference. "Kill Boksoon" was officially invited to the 73rd Berlin International Film Festival and ranked first in the global streaming of non-English language films on Netflix just three days after its release. Jeon Do-yeon said, "I feel so thrilled and exhilarated."
Jeon Do-yeon recently made headlines with her romantic comedy acting in the drama 'One Hit Scandal.' She said, "Not all of my works were box office successes, but I thought I had grown steadily as an actress." She expressed her frustration, saying, "But there are people who talk as if I suddenly became a star when the ratings were good, and that hurt my pride."
Nonetheless, the attention and love from the public for her new works are a great source of strength for her. Jeon Do-yeon shared, "I received fan letters recently for the first time in a long while, and all of them were from teenagers and people in their 20s. They even sent stickers for my daughter." She added, "I felt happy to know that people were rediscovering my older works thanks to my recent movies and dramas, and I'm truly grateful for that."
Jeon Do-yeon's unwavering commitment to her craft and her openness to new challenges have not only expanded her repertoire as an actress but also demonstrated her versatility to audiences around the world. With a growing fan base and continued success, Jeon Do-yeon is proving that there is indeed more to her than meets the eye.
