Broadcasters and Viewers Cut Ties with Celebrities Involved in Scandals: Drunk Driving, Drugs, and Military Evasion
As viewers declare their decision to cut ties with celebrities involved in social controversies such as military service evasion and drunk driving, broadcasters are following suit.
Recently, it has been impossible to ignore the feeling that the entertainment pages are becoming more like the society pages. Celebrities involved in drug scandals and drunk driving incidents have caused frowns, and stars facing allegations of military service evasion have also made headlines. As these socially controversial celebrities continue to be exposed, the entertainment pages have become another reflection of society.
While viewers are the first to cut ties with these socially controversial celebrities, broadcasters are also following suit.
Recently, KBS issued a temporary broadcast appearance ban on actors who caused controversy due to drunk driving, changing the ban to an appearance suspension depending on the trial results.
The celebrities affected by the appearance suspension are Kim Sae-ron and Shin Hye-sung. Both have caused controversy due to drunk driving and were sentenced to fines of 20 million won and six months imprisonment with one-year probation, respectively. Previously, in October of last year, KBS decided on temporary appearance restrictions for the two, but changed it to appearance suspension following the recent trial results.
KBS has set "actions causing social controversy due to illegal or immoral behavior" as subjects for broadcast appearance regulation review. This includes "military service evasion," "habitual use of prescription drugs and marijuana smoking," "fraud, theft, gambling," "assault and sexual harassment," "other cases of civil and criminal prosecution," and "cases that undermine public morals and social order." The review committee takes measures such as "recommendation to refrain from casting," "temporary appearance suspension," and "broadcast appearance regulation" depending on the severity of the issue.
A temporary appearance restriction has been imposed on singer Ravi, who is being tried for allegations of military service evasion. Ravi is accused of colluding with a broker to obtain a false epilepsy diagnosis and receive an exemption from military service as a social service agent. The prosecution is seeking a two-year prison sentence for Ravi.
The reason Ravi received "temporary appearance restrictions" instead of an "appearance suspension" is because the trial is still ongoing. Depending on the trial results, the "temporary appearance restrictions" for Ravi may be changed to a broadcast appearance suspension or lifted altogether.
However, the decision to "cut ties" with Ravi has already been made. KBS has suspended some of the rerun services for "1 Night 2 Days Season 4," in which Ravi appeared. "1 Night 2 Days Season 4" will not provide a total of 123 episodes for about three years.
In addition, composer Don Spike, who is being tried for drug use allegations, has also been banned from appearing and was expelled.
