BTS Jin Shatters US Billboard K-Pop Solo Record with 'The Astronaut'
BTS' Jin has set a new record in the US Billboard chart with his debut solo single, "The Astronaut," showcasing his global popularity.
On April 11, Jin's "The Astronaut" climbed to 9th place on the Billboard World Digital Song Sales Chart (dated April 15th), marking 14 weeks on the chart. This achievement broke the longest-charting K-pop solo record in the past decade and tied the 14-week record set by BTS' "Yet To Come" in 2022.
With this accomplishment, Jin has become a K-pop artist with the longest-charting group and solo songs on the World Digital Song Sales Chart.
Following Jin's "The Astronaut" at 14 weeks are PSY's "That That" with 12 weeks, Jungkook's "Dreamers" and Lisa's "Lalisa" with 10 weeks each. Jin's "The Astronaut" has spent 12 out of its 14 weeks in the top 10, highlighting his superstar presence.
Additionally, "The Astronaut" debuted at number one on the World Digital Song Sales Chart on October 28th last year, staying at the top for three consecutive weeks. This also stands as the longest number-one record for a K-pop solo in the past decade.
Jin has proved his immense popularity as a top solo artist by placing three solo songs, "Yours," "Super Tuna," and "The Astronaut," at the top of the chart alongside BTS' songs.
With 44,000 sales in its first week, "The Astronaut" recorded the fifth-highest sales debut among all songs released in 2022 on the Digital Song Sales Chart. Based on this first-week data, the song reached 58th place on the US Billboard 2022 Year-End Digital Song Sales Chart, making Jin the only K-pop solo artist to achieve this.
Moreover, "The Astronaut" set the record for the highest debut sales for a single version by a Korean solo artist on the Global 200 chart, selling 62,000 copies. The song debuted in 10th place, becoming the first Korean solo song to enter the top 10 and charting for four consecutive weeks.
Jin's "The Astronaut" debuted at 51st on the Billboard Hot 100, setting the record for the highest debut ranking for a K-pop artist. The song also spent five consecutive weeks on the Billboard Excluding US Global Chart and entered the Billboard Emerging Artists Chart at number one for three consecutive weeks.
In Japan, Jin's "The Astronaut" reached the 4th spot on the Billboard Japan Hot 100, the highest position for a Korean solo song in the past decade. The song also ranked 49th on the Billboard Japan Year-End Top Single Sales Chart, being the only Korean song to do so after just a month of release.
"The Astronaut" has topped iTunes Top Songs charts in 104 countries, including reaching the top spot on the US iTunes Top Songs chart in a record-breaking 1 hour and 23 minutes for a K-pop solo.
Furthermore, Jin's "The Astronaut" became the first single album to achieve "Million Seller" status on the Hanteo Chart, recording the second-highest sales for a solo artist in 2022. The song sold 770,000 copies on the Gaon Chart, setting the record for the highest first-week sales for a male solo single. In Japan, "The Astronaut" became the first Korean solo of 2022 to receive a gold certification from RIA.
The music video for "The Astronaut" also made history by ranking first on the YouTube Global Music Trending Chart for 17 consecutive days, breaking the previous record of 16 days held by Jin's own "Super Tuna." This achievement established a new record for the longest-charting K-pop artist and further solidified Jin's position as a dominant solo performer.
In summary, Jin's debut solo single, "The Astronaut," has shattered multiple records on the US Billboard charts, the Japanese charts, and other global music platforms. His incredible achievements have cemented his status as a top solo artist in the K-pop industry and beyond, garnering international recognition and acclaim.
