BLACKPINK's Jennie Heads to Cannes Film Festival with 'The Idol'
The 76th Cannes International Film Festival has announced its invited films, and "The Idol," starring BLACKPINK's Jennie, has been invited to the non-competitive section.
On the morning of April 13th (local time), the 76th Cannes International Film Festival office held an official press conference in Paris, France, to announce the official invitation list. Among them, "The Idol" will be screened for the first time in the non-competitive section.
Other films in the non-competitive section include "Indiana Jones: Dial of Destiny" (directed by James Mangold), "Killers of the Flower Moon" (directed by Martin Scorsese), and 'Spider's Web' (directed by Kim Jee-woon).
"The Idol" is set in the music industry of Los Angeles (LA) and tells the story of a popular female pop singer's journey through the music world and her love life. Singer The Weeknd participated in the co-production, with Sam Levinson, the director of HBO's popular series 'Euphoria,' taking the helm. Details about the characters are still under wraps.
Starring Lily-Rose Depp, daughter of Johnny Depp, "The Idol" boasts a star-studded lineup including The Weeknd, Troye Sivan, and Dan Levy. In particular, BLACKPINK's Jennie makes her acting debut in the film, garnering significant interest in her home country.
Deadline, a local media outlet, reported, "According to the organizers, it has not yet been confirmed whether Jennie will attend the Cannes Film Festival, but Jennie, who is well known as a member of BLACKPINK, will be a factor that can attract Generation Z to the Cannes International Film Festival." Jennie's attendance is still undecided.
Meanwhile, the 76th Cannes International Film Festival has selected Johnny Depp's comeback film "Minamata" (directed by Maywenn) as the opening film and will take place from May 16th to 27th.
