'Reality is Harsher Than Drama': Real-life Punishments Behind 'Taxi Driver 2' Crimes
SBS drama "Taxi Driver 2" has tackled various criminal cases, ranging from real estate fraud to a cult leader's misdeeds, and even the infamous Burning Sun scandal. While the drama is known for its dramatic storytelling, the real-life situations it addresses are no less shocking.
"Taxi Driver 2" is a popular revenge drama featuring Rainbow Transportation and taxi driver Kim Do-ki, who seek vengeance on behalf of wronged victims. The show has garnered attention for its episodes based on actual criminal cases.
In episodes 10 and 11, Kim Do-ki infiltrates the notorious "Black Sun" club disguised as a security guard. The "Black Sun" episode is reminiscent of the Burning Sun scandal involving various crimes, including sexual assault, drugs, and police corruption. The show's portrayal of a wealthy celebrity named Victor enjoying the club's debauchery brings to mind the singer Seungri, a key figure in the scandal, who was recently released from prison after facing eight charges.
In episodes 7 and 8, Kim Do-ki teaches a lesson to a cult leader who brainwashes his sick followers, claiming that faith alone can cure them. The recent Netflix documentary 'I Am God' similarly exposed the shocking reality of individuals exploiting religion for personal gain. The leader of the Christian Gospel Mission (JMS), Jeong Myeong-seok, is currently on trial for multiple counts of sexual assault committed against two female followers between 2018 and 2019.
Kim Do-ki targets illegal real estate brokers in episodes 5 and 6. By adopting a child to gain extra points for apartment applications, unscrupulous brokers like Gang Pil-seung prey on desperate newlywed couples. This story was inspired by a real incident in 2009 where a broker named Kim coerced childless couples to file false adoption reports to qualify for special housing allotments.
Episodes 3 and 4 deal with scams targeting elderly people in rural areas. Criminals often exploit the elderly's vulnerabilities to sell overpriced health products, using performances and tours as a ploy to gain their trust.
The illegal online gambling problem discussed in episodes 1 and 2 remains pervasive in society. A major case last year involved a gambling site organization generating over 5.7 trillion won (roughly $4.8 billion) in revenue. Twenty people were arrested, and 171 were indicted.
Although "Taxi Driver 2" is a fictional drama, the social issues it highlights closely resemble real-life incidents. The show's portrayal of extralegal revenge may offer some consolation to viewers, who have been appalled by the heinous criminal acts featured in the series. The mixed feelings of satisfaction and sorrow experienced by the audience demonstrate the harsh reality behind the drama.
