Drunken Driving Trial Verdict for Actress Kim Sae-ron Set for Tomorrow
The first trial verdict for actress Kim Sae-ron, who caused an accident while driving under the influence, is scheduled for tomorrow. The outcome of the case is drawing attention.
According to legal sources, Judge Shin Hyuk-jae of the Seoul Central District Court's Criminal Division 4 will conduct the sentencing hearing for Kim Sae-ron, who is charged with violating the Road Traffic Act (drunk driving) on the 5th (Korean Time).
At the final hearing held on the 8th of last month, the prosecution requested the court impose a fine of 20 million won on Kim Sae-ron for violating the Road Traffic Act (drunk driving) and a fine of 5 million won on the passenger who was also charged with abetting.
Kim Sae-ron's defense attorney acknowledged the charges and stated, "The defendant deeply regrets and repents. She is determined not to commit such a crime again." The attorney also reported that Kim had distanced herself from alcohol, sold her car, and fully paid the compensation for the damages. The lawyer emphasized the low likelihood of recidivism, citing that Kim had previously used designated drivers even for short distances.
The attorney also appealed for leniency by highlighting Kim Sae-ron's financial difficulties. "The defendant is currently supporting her family as the sole breadwinner, and her family is also struggling," the attorney said, adding, "She is facing financial hardships after paying substantial compensation. We ask for the utmost leniency."
Kim Sae-ron, who was once called a child prodigy actress for her role in the movie "The Man from Nowhere," caused an accident last May while driving drunk, crashing into guardrails, trees, and transformers. The accident caused power outages in nearby stores, leaving people in shock. Since then, Kim Sae-ron has been out of the public eye and ended her exclusive contract with Gold Medalist without renewal. She is currently not engaged in any entertainment activities.
However, controversy arose over allegations that Kim attended another drinking party during her period of reflection. Furthermore, questions have been raised over Kim's claims of financial difficulties, considering her display of wealth on television and hiring one of the top 10 law firms in Korea after the accident. The debate continues.
In response to these concerns, Kim Sae-ron's attorney stated, "It is true that she has been using her earnings to support her family's livelihood and has faced financial difficulties after the incident, as she had to pay penalties for advertisements." The verdict in the case is garnering much attention.
