2022 Grammy Awards Snubs BTS, K-Pop Idols Receive Only One Nomination Even After A Blockbuster Year
Global pop sensation and K-pop idols BTS have been nominated in only one category for the 2022 Grammy Awards, despite releasing three No. 1 singles in 2021.
Incidentally, it is the band's nomination in the same category for the second consecutive year. BTS bagged a nomination last year in the pop duo/group performance category for the super hit 2020 track "Dynamite." The award, however, ended up going to Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande for "Rain On Me".
For the 2022 Grammy Awards, the global sensation from South Korea received just one nomination for pop duo/group performance for the mega-hit song "Butter". Other nominees in this category include Doja Cat and Sza for "Kiss Me More", Coldplay for "Higher Power", Justin Bieber and Benny Blanco for "Lonely", Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga for "I Get A Kick Out Of You".
The Bangtan Boys had submitted seven Grammy nominations this year. Their album, "BE", was entered for "Best Pop Vocal Album'", "Album Of The Year", ' and "Engineered Non-Classical" album. "Butter" was submitted in the "Record of The Year", "Song Of The Year", and "Best Pop Duo/Group Performance" categories, while "Permission To Dance" was up for the 'Best Music Video" category.
BTS was excluded from the coveted song and record of the year categories, even though "Butter" spent 10 weeks on top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. "Permission to Dance" had also reached at No. 1 on the Hot 100, as did the popular collaboration with Coldplay, "My Universe."
The Grammy's snub came just two days after BTS dominated the fan-voted 2021 American Music Awards. They created history by becoming the first Asian group to win the night's top honor "Artist of the Year". Band members J-Hope, Jimin, RM, Jungkook, Jin, V, and Suga also won the prize for pop group, while "Butter" earned them the award for pop song.
Meanwhile, BTS was also a part of the star line-up that announced the nominees on Tuesday, with the K-pop singers revealing the alternative music album nominees.
On a more positive note, the seven-member group is the only artist from South Korea to be nominated in the Grammy for the pop categories. It is a testament to BTS's mainstream success in the Western world, with most of its recent releases appealing to American audiences.
The 64th annual Grammy Awards will be held on January 31, 2022, at the Crypto.com Arena (formerly Staples Center) in Los Angeles. (Yibada News)
