'Peninsula' Smashes 2 Million Moviegoer-Record In The Box Office Amidst COVID-19
"Train To Busan's" sequel "Peninsula" is claiming another achievement as it breached 2 million moviegoers amidst the season of COVID-19.
As reported by the Korean Fim Council, the movie "Peninsula" achieved 2,000,908 moviegoers on July 21 at 2:13 PM, KST.
As previously reported by Soompi on July 18, "Peninsula" proved to be a box office hit amidst coronavirus pandemic as it officially surpassed 1 million (1,000,790) moviegoers since its release on July 15. This means that the zombie-themed movie was able to reach the milestone in less than four days.
The movie also secured the number one spot in the weekend's box office sales as the zombie blockbuster took up 50.8 percent of all screenings nationwide and dominated 77.9 percent of all screen time for films.
This time, as it broke box-office records with 2 million moviegoers, the movie did not just achieve the feat in seven days, but it is the sole film to make the history since late-February when the COVID-19 reached its peak in Korea.
According to Korea JongAng Daily, the movie "Peninsula" also took the number one spot in the box office records of Thailand, Singapore, and Malaysia over the weekend. The second spot was taken by another zombie film starring Park Shin-Hye and Yoo Ah-in titled "#ALIVE" while the Hollywood film "Bombshell," occupied the third spot.
Moreover, the cast members, Kang Dong Won, Lee Jung Hyun, Kwon Hae Hyo, Goo Gyo Hwan, Kim Min Jae, Lee Re, Kim Do Yoon, and Lee Ye-won together with the film director Yeon Sang-Ho, shared handwritten messages of thanks to the moviegoers.
The highly anticipated follow-up of "Train To Busan" (2016) shows Korea's picture after four years since the zombie outbreak. "Peninsula" also tells the story of those who are still alive as they lived their lives without assurance in Korea's ruins.
Congratulations to the hard-working team of the "Peninsula!"
