Former Sechs Kies' Member Kang Sunghoon Claims Today's Idols Are "Ugly"
Kang Sung-hoon, a former Sechs Kies member, was filmed during an impromptu fan conference at a park with his supporters defaming many of the new idols for their appearances.
He can be seen sitting on a picnic table in the footage, and the very first issue he talked about was how he wished to get taller personally, attracting laughter from his audience. Sung-hoon was then overheard speaking about how he believes celebrities are just plain disgusting these days.
A fan asked him to whom he referred, but Kang Sung-hoon simply gave a general response. A different fan asked him about BTOB, which Kang Sung-hoon and the supporters saw somewhere before the video was filmed (at an unspecified date and time). "How can I claim it's them right now? But they're really ugly. I'd look at their faces if I was producing [a team] and then select [the members]. Should not artists have to look really good, at least? Their complexion must be beautiful, and they need an aura surrounding them." (via Koreaboo)
ABOUT KANG SUNG HOON
DSP Entertainment scouted Kang Sung-hoon, studying abroad in Honolulu back then, alongside partner Eun Ji-won in a night club. They were to perform as a pair, but because H.O.T. was such a major success, DSP Entertainment agreed to form a male idol group of six members instead.
However, Kang Sung-hoon declined to join the party of six. The DSP CEO, Lee Ho-Yeon, convinced Kang Sung-hoon by granting him veto power. And so the other four leaders were chosen with the approval of Kang Sung-hoon.
Sechs Kies made its debut on KMTV Show on April 15, 1997, with its first release, "Byeolgok School" with Kang Sung-hoon as Sechs Kies's main vocalist.
Sung-hoon talked the most during TV shows because he was sociable. Sechs Kies succeeded tremendously and became an embodiment of Korean idol groups of the 1990s. Yet, Sechs Kies abruptly dissolved after completing their fourth album promotion in 2000.
