Kim Sae-ron’s Final Words: Unsent Letter and Pain After Legal Threat from Kim Soo-hyun’s Agency
The late actress Kim Sae-ron's unreleased letter to actor Kim Soo-hyun has come to light, shedding further detail on her emotional state in the final months of her life.
On March 27, attorney Boo Ji-seok, legal representative of Kim Sae-ron's family from Law Firm Buyou, held a press conference in Seocho-gu, Seoul. During the briefing, Boo revealed KakaoTalk messages and a handwritten letter that Kim Sae-ron had written to Kim Soo-hyun but never sent. The letter is believed to have been written in April 2024, shortly after Kim received a legal notice from Kim Soo-hyun's agency, Gold Medalist.
"Hi, it's me, Roni. I hope you've been well. I'm writing this because I want to clear up the misunderstandings between us," the letter begins. "I couldn't contact anyone at the company, and I was terrified of a lawsuit. I'm sorry for uploading the photo-I only did it in the hope that someone from the company would reach out. I didn't mean to cause harm. I'm scared and uncomfortable with the people at Gold Medalist. No one answered my calls after I left the agency. I never meant to make things difficult for you."
In the letter, Kim expressed her yearning for reconciliation and her pain at being ignored. "I sincerely hope you're happy. We've been together for about five to six years. You were my first and last love, so I hope you won't avoid me. Seeing you avoid me like I don't even exist makes everything we had feel meaningless and empty."
She continued, "Can't we just be on good terms? Not more, not less-just supporting each other from afar. Do you really hate me that much? Why?" The letter ends with a plea: "I won't interfere in your life anymore, so please don't hate me... I hope there's a day we can smile and talk again. This is my number: 010-xxxx-xxxx. Please reply if you read this. I had no other way to get my true feelings across. I hope your address hasn't changed. I hope you read this, not someone else. I'll always support you in your career, your love, your happiness. Let's not let our memories turn bad."
Kim Sae-ron, once hailed as a "child genius" actress, came under public scrutiny after a drunk driving accident in May 2022. Despite her handwritten apology acknowledging the harm caused to local businesses and citizens, the controversy dealt a severe blow to her career.
Her brief return to social media in March 2023 reignited public criticism when she posted and quickly deleted a photo showing her cheek-to-cheek with Kim Soo-hyun. The post fueled dating rumors and backlash, further isolating the actress.
On February 16, 2024, Kim was found collapsed in her home and later pronounced dead. No signs of foul play or a suicide note were found. The 25-year-old had ended her own life after years of emotional hardship.
Following her death, the family accused Kim Soo-hyun and his agency of contributing to her distress. In a video on YouTube channel "Garo Sero Institute" (known as GaSeYeon), the family alleged Kim and Kim Sae-ron were in a relationship starting in her teenage years, and that the agency pressured her to repay 700 million KRW in damages related to her DUI incident-allegedly with Kim Soo-hyun standing by silently.
Gold Medalist responded that Kim Soo-hyun dated Kim Sae-ron only from the summer of 2019 to fall 2020, when she was legally an adult. The agency added that the legal notice concerning the damages was part of a formal accounting process and that there was no coercive collection attempt.
According to attorney Boo, Kim Sae-ron's letter explains her motive for uploading the controversial photo and how she felt overwhelmed following the legal notice. However, the letter never reached Kim Soo-hyun.
Boo explained, "The letter was written in early April last year after receiving the legal notice. We attempted to deliver it to his residence, but the building had restricted access."
During the press conference, Boo also disclosed self-harm photos from Kim Sae-ron, saying, "We are showing these to illustrate her mental state after receiving the notice."
