BLACKPINK Renews Group Contract with YG Entertainment, Individual Member Agreements Still Under Discussion
BLACKPINK (Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, Lisa) has signed a group-exclusive contract with YG Entertainment, though individual contracts for the members are still in negotiation.
YG Entertainment announced on December 6, "After thorough discussions, we have concluded a group-exclusive contract with BLACKPINK based on mutual trust." As a result, BLACKPINK is set to continue their journey with YG, releasing new albums and embarking on world tours.
However, it remains uncertain whether the members will continue their individual activities with YG Entertainment. An official from YG Entertainment told Maeil Business Star Today, "Negotiations are ongoing regarding individual contracts of the members."
Since their debut in August 2016 with the double title tracks 'Whistle' and 'Boombayah,' BLACKPINK has gained immense popularity. They have continued to rise as representative artists in K-pop, hitting success with tracks like 'As If It's Your Last,' 'Kill This Love,' 'DDU-DU DDU-DU,' 'Lovesick Girls,' and 'Shut Down.'
Based on this popularity, BLACKPINK has set numerous records, including becoming the first K-pop girl group to achieve double million-seller status, reaching number one on the U.S. Billboard 200, being the first Asian artist to headline Coachella and Hyde Park, and staging the largest scale world tour by a Korean female artist.
Each member of BLACKPINK has also established a solid individual presence. All four members serve as global ambassadors for luxury brands and have amassed over 70 million followers each on social media. Lisa, in particular, recently surpassed 99.3 million followers on social media, nearing the 100 million mark.
Given BLACKPINK's strong individual brand presence, it is speculated that reaching a consensus on staying together under YG Entertainment may not be straightforward. This may lead to a scenario where the members pursue solo activities under different agencies, while group activities continue under YG.
With BLACKPINK choosing to maintain their team through a group-exclusive contract, the public is keenly interested in how they will navigate their individual careers.
