Hwasa Sheds Tears of Relief: Cleared of Indecency Accusations for Performance
MAMAMOO's Hwasa, who was accused by the Student and Parents Human Rights Protection Coalition (KPA) of being "more harmful than a flasher," has been cleared of indecency charges related to her performance.
On the 26th of last month, the Seoul Seongdong Police Station announced a non-indictment decision for Hwasa, who was reported by KPA for alleged indecent performance.
The police explained their decision, stating, "After summoning Hwasa as the accused and investigating the content and progression of the performance, and after comprehensively reviewing statements from related parties, it was difficult to acknowledge any criminal charges."
Back in May, Hwasa performed at the Sungkyunkwan University festival during the filming of tvN's variety show 'Dance Singer Yurangdan.' During her performance of her hit song 'Don't Give It To Me,' she made a gesture towards a specific part of her body. This act, captured by fans and spread online, ignited a controversy over its alleged indecency.
KPA reported Hwasa to the police, arguing that her performance evoked perverted sexual relations, causing embarrassment to the public who witnessed it. The representative of 학인연, who reported Hwasa, also claimed on CBS's 'Kim Hyun-jung's News Show' last month that "A flasher gets punished under the minor offense law. In Hwasa's case, since a larger unspecified number of people saw it, its negative impact is even greater than that of a flasher."
Although the police cleared Hwasa of the charges, KPA is reportedly planning to submit a request for a reinvestigation.
Recently, Hwasa candidly shared her feelings about the controversy on the YouTube channel 'Sung Si-kyung.' She mentioned, "When I arrived in the U.S. for MAMAMOO's North American tour, I had many messages. I thought something had happened. I prayed and then checked the messages." She continued, "I realized the controversy was about my performance. The level of hate comments was really high. I usually don't get affected by hate comments, but this time it was different."
She added, "The New York concert was the first one, and I performed as if nothing was wrong. But as soon as the concert ended, I burst into tears. When I arrived at the hotel and was going up in the elevator with the members, tears poured down like a waterfall. I think I cried the most that year."
She also revealed, "Psy contacted me late at night. I was feeling down, wondering what kind of songs I should sing in the future, and feeling uncertain about the future. Even though I hadn't signed with P Nation yet, he sent me a song saying it was good. The song was 'I Love My Body.' After listening to it, I smiled for the first time during the North American tour. The title itself was so amusing, especially given the indecency controversy. The song made me feel much better and reminded me of my initial intentions."
Meanwhile, Hwasa signed an exclusive contract with P Nation, led by Psy, in June and released her new song 'I Love My Body' on the 6th of last month.
